Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله:
“If the good thoughts motivate one to do good actions, encourage an individual to do them and lead a person to them, then it is sound and good. But if these same thoughts lead a person to idleness and a devotion to sins, then it is in fact deception.
Having good thoughts is also the correct method of hope. So whoever's hope attracts them to obedience and deters them from sin, then it is the correct hope.
However, whoever has confused the two and made his lack of good actions to be a form of hope to the extent his hope amounts to nothing more than idleness and neglect, then he is deluded.”
[The Disease & The Cure | Pg. 95]

“A sign of heedlessness among Muslims in this era is the wasting of time and in allowing seasons to pass by without building anything of value or drawing lessons from them. Anniversaries pass without reflection, and events unfold without contemplation. People pay no attention to the passing days and months, nor learn from the swift passage of years and ages. Neglect has taken over, slumber has grown long, and hearts have hardened-they are like stones, and maybe even harder.”

A cure for the hearts
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
“There is a chaos in the heart that cannot be brought to order except by one turning to Allah, and in one's heart is a loneliness that cannot be removed except by finding company with Allah whilst alone, and in the heart [as well] is a sadness that cannot be distanced except by finding happiness with knowing Allah.”

Hadith
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
While the Prophet (ﷺ) and I were coming out of the mosque, a man met us outside the gate. The man said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ! When will be the Hour?" The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "What have you prepared for it?" The man became afraid and ashamed and then said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ! I haven't prepared for it much of fasts, prayers or charitable gifts but I love Allah and His Messenger." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You will be with the one whom you love."

Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There is no believing servant but that he has a sin he habitually commits from time to time, or a sin entrenched in him that he does not abandon until he departs the world. Verily, the believer was created to be tested, both repenting and forgetful. If he is reminded, he will remember.”

“Among the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim are that he cover his faults, forgive his mistakes, have mercy for his errors, overlook his missteps, reject his backbiting, always give him sincere advice, preserve his good traits, guard his covenants, answer his invitations, accept his guidance, repay his gifts, show gratitude for his favours, assist him in the best manner, fulfill his needs, intercede for his problems, respond to his sneeze, refuse his misguided advice, protect him and not take him as an enemy, support him against his oppressors, restrain him from oppressing others, not surrender him, not abandon him, and to love for him what he loves for himself and to hate for him what he hates for himself.”

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
“In the heart are disorders that cannot be remedied except by responding to Allāh. In it is a desolate feeling that cannot be removed except by intimacy with Him in solitude. In it is sadness which will not leave except by happiness with knowing Him and truthfulness in His dealings. In it is anxiety that is not made tranquil except by gathering for His sake and fleeing to Him from His punishment. In it is a fire of regret which cannot be extinguished except by satisfaction with His commands, prohibitions, and decrees, and embracing patience with that until the time he meets Him. In it is a strong desire that will not cease until He is the only one who is sought. In it is a void that cannot be filled except by His love, turning to Him, always remembering Him, and being sincere to Him. Were a person to be given the entire world and everything in it, that would never fill the void.”
