Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) was known to walk through the streets of Madinah at night, unseen, listening more than speaking, observing more than questioning.
One night, as he passed by a modest home, he heard a mother speaking to her daughter.
The mother said,
"Mix water into the milk so we can sell more tomorrow."
The daughter replied softly,
"Amir al-Mu'minin has forbidden mixing water with milk."
The mother responded impatiently,
"Umar is not here to see us."
The daughter paused... then said words that shook the night:
"If Umar cannot see us, then surely the Lord of Umar can." Umar (RA) froze in his place.
He had not been seen.
He had not been recognized.
But he had been answered.
He returned home deeply moved and said to his son,
"Find out who that girl is."
When he learned of her honesty, her fear of Allah, and her integrity in private, Umar (RA) chose her for his son, honoring her not for her beauty, nor her wealth, but for her taqwa.
From that union would later come Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, one of the most just rulers in Islamic history.
Umar (RA) walked away that night knowing something profound:
The strength of this Ummah would never lie in armies or wealth... but in hearts that fear Allah even when no one is watching.

Al-Ma'idah 5:2

Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.

Ibnul Qayyim رحمه الله said:

“O you of little resolve! Where do you stand upon this path?

Aadam found it difficult and Nuh lamented because of it, while Allaah’s khaleel, Ibraaheem, was thrown into a pit of fire due to it. Isma‘eel was lying upon his side ready to be sacrificed for its sake, and while upon it Yusuf was sold for a cheap price then falsely cast into prison for many years. Zakariyyah was sawn in half, and Yahya was slaughtered due to it. Ayyub suffered great distress, while Dawood cried copiously, and ‘Isaa cured the wretched poor of their diseases and walked with wild beasts due to it.

And how many, how many forms of difficulty and hardship did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ faced while proceeding upon it, yet you live through amusements and distractions!”

Sunnah Gems Series

One of the most weighty Sunnahs is removing harm from the path.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِمَاطَةُ الْأَذَى عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ صَدَقَةٌ
“Removing something harmful from the road is a charity.”
— Bukhari & Muslim

Islam teaches us to care not only for hearts — but for spaces. A believer is a source of safety, ease, and benefit wherever they go. Even an unnoticed act, done quietly for Allah, becomes ṣadaqah.

A thorn, a stone, broken glass — what others ignore, Allah records.

🌿 A Deed That Can Open Jannah

The Prophet ﷺ told us of a man who found a thorny branch on the road and removed it. Allah appreciated his action so greatly that He forgave him.

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said that a man saw a branch harming people and said, “By Allah, I will remove this so it does not harm the Muslims.” Allah admitted him into Jannah.

🤍 What This Sunnah Teaches Us

Removing harm means:
• Preventing injury before it happens
• Caring for people regardless of not knowing them
• Choosing responsibility over indifference

It reflects a heart that is alive, alert, and considerate. 🌿

🌿 And the Reward?

For every harm you remove for Allah:

🔹 It is written as charity
🔹 People are protected through you
🔹 Allah is pleased with your concern
🔹 Sins are forgiven

Islam is not only prayer and fasting — it is being a benefit.

A believer is like a rose; even when crushed it gives off fragrance.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Do you know what is backbiting? They (the Companions) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Thereupon he (the Prophet ﷺ) said: Backbiting implies you talking about your brother in a manner which he does not like. It was said to him: What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of? He said: If (that failing) is actually found (in him) what you assert, you in fact backbited him, and if that is not in him it is a slander.

[Sahih Muslim 2589]

Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyād said, "Love is better than fear. Do you not see that if you have two slaves one of whom loves you and the other of whom fears you, that the one who loves you will be true to you whether you are present or absent because of his love of you. The one who fears you will perhaps be true to you when you are present because of his fear of you, but he will deceive you when you are absent and not be true to you."
