It was narrated from Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ ) said;
“There are people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger, and their are those who pray and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless night.”

“Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, and hates for the sake of Allah, and whoever seals a friendship for His sake, or declares an enmity for His sake, will receive, because of this, the protection of Allah. No one may taste true faith except by this, even if his prayers and fasts are many. People have come to build their relationships around the concerns of the world, but it will not benefit them in any way.”

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:
“Helping the poor with food in the month of Ramadān is from the practice of Islām.
Indeed the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
من فطّر صائماً فله مثل أجره
'Whoever opens the fast of a person fasting then he gets the like of his reward.'”

The purpose of fasting is not to merely stay away from food and drink but to gain taqwa, as mentioned in Quran 2:183.
Taqwa is a level of awareness of Allah which prevents a person from sinning. The aim is to gain this taqwa in Ramadan & to make it last for another 11 months!

Do not let your eyes crave what We have allowed some of the disbelievers to enjoy; the fleeting splendour of this worldly life, which We test them with. But your Lord's provision in the Hereafter is far better and more lasting.
