Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه was asked about true repentance.
He replied: It is that you repent from the sin and never do it again, or never intend to do it again.

Ar-Rum 30:30
فَأَقِمۡ وَجۡهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًاۚ فِطۡرَتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِى فَطَرَ ٱلنَّاسَ عَلَيۡهَاۚ لَا تَبۡدِيلَ لِخَلۡقِ ٱللَّهِۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ
So set you (O Muhammad SAW) your face towards the religion of pure Islamic Monotheism Hanifa (worship none but Allah Alone) Allah's Fitrah (i.e. Allah's Islamic Monotheism), with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Khalq-illah (i.e. the Religion of Allah Islamic Monotheism), that is the straight religion, but most of men know not.
ފަހެ، باطل މަގުން އެއްކިބާވެ، حق ގެ މަގަށް تبع ވެގެންވާ حال، ކަލޭގެފާނުގެ މޫނުފުޅު إسلام دين އާ ކުރިމަތި ކުރައްވާށެވެ! އެއީ މީސްތަކުން އެ فطرة އެއްގެ މައްޗަށް އުފެއްދެވި اللَّه ގެ فطرة އެވެ. اللَّه އުފެއްދެވި އުފެއްދެވުމަށް ބަދަލެއް ގެނައުމެއް ނެތެވެ. ސީދާވެގެންވާ دين އަކީ އެއީއެވެ. އެހެނެއްކަމަކު، މީސްތަކުންކުރެ ގިނަމީހުން (އެކަމެއް) ނުދަނެތެވެ.

Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله , said :
"I think part of the test is when a believer supplicates and receives no response, and he repeats the dua for a long time and sees no sign of a response. He should realise that this is a test and needs patience."

Al-Anfal 8:30
وَإِذْ يَمْكُرُ بِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيُثْبِتُوكَ أَوْ يَقْتُلُوكَ أَوْ يُخْرِجُوكَۚ وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ ٱللَّهُۖ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرُ ٱلْمَٰكِرِينَ
And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) to imprison you, or to kill you, or to get you out (from your home, i.e. Makkah); they were plotting and Allâh too was plotting; and Allâh is the Best of those who plot.
وَإِذْ يَمْكُرُ بِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيُثْبِتُوكَ أَوْ يَقْتُلُوكَ أَوْ يُخْرِجُوكَۚ وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ ٱللَّهُۖ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرُ ٱلْمَٰكِرِينَ

At-Taubah 9:102
وَءَاخَرُونَ ٱعۡتَرَفُواْ بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ خَلَطُواْ عَمَلًا صَٰلِحًا وَءَاخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيۡهِمْۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
And (there are) others who have acknowledged their sins, they have mixed a deed that was righteous with another that was evil. Perhaps Allah will turn unto them in forgiveness. Surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
އަދި އެހެންބަޔަކު އެއުރެންގެ ކުށްތަކަށް اعتراف ވޫއެވެ. އެއުރެން ހެޔޮ عمل އަކާއި، ނުބައި އެހެން ކަމަކާ އެއްކޮށްފައިވެއެވެ. اللَّه، އެއުރެން މައްޗަށް توبة ލެއްވުން ގާތްވެގެންވެތެވެ. ހަމަކަށަވަރުން، اللَّه އީ، ގިނަގިނައިން ފާފަފުއްސަވާ، رحيم ވަންތަ ރަސްކަލާނގެއެވެ.
