Dear sisters, be honourable.

The general rule for a Muslimah who fears her Lord is that she is not loud and open in her speech and behaviour. Rather the true nature of a Muslimah is al-Hayā which encompasses shyness and modesty, the most beautiful and honourable of characteristics.

Sadly this has become forgotten and overlooked due to the societies in which we live today, the company which we keep, and the lack of understanding of the Dīn of Islām. To add to this, the presence of social media means Muslim men and women have found it easy to be loose in their behaviour, with the boundaries set out by the Sharī'ah becoming more and more obscured.

We must remember that we are accountable in front of Allāh for the way we speak and behave online as well as in public.

Allāh mentions as an example:

“O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allāh ), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.”

[Sūrah al-Ahzāb Verse 32]

Imām al-Qurtubi (may Allāh have mercy on him) mentioned regarding this Āyah;

“This means that they should not speak softly. Allāh commanded them to speak in a concise and decisive manner. There should be no possible indication on the face that could be taken to indicate any softness in the heart, as was the situation with the Arab women (in Jāhiliyyah), when they used to speak to the men, by making their voices soft like speaking to small children, or like prostitutes. Allāh forbade women from the likes of this.”

“And the speaking in an honourable manner: means speaking in a way that does not go against the Sharī'ah or in a way that offends people.”

It goes on to mention;

“And the woman is encouraged when speaking to strange men and to those amongst her in-laws to be rough and abrupt in her speech, without raising her voice, because indeed the woman is commanded to lower her speech.”

Strive to be honourable dear sisters and follow in the footsteps of the mothers of the believers; the best of women.

May Allāh ﷻ have mercy on you all.

“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.”

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales; and do not look for the others’ faults and do not spy, and do not be jealous of one another, and do not desert (cut your relation with) one another, and do not hate one another; and O Allah’s worshipers! Be brothers (as Allah has ordered you!”) (Bukhari)

Al-Nasaa’i (4605) narrated that Muhammad ibn Jahsh (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
We were sitting with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when he raised his head towards the sky, then he put his palm on his forehead and said: “Subhaan-Allaah!  What a strict issue has been revealed to me!” We remained silent and were afraid. The following morning I asked him, “O Messenger of Allaah, what is this strict issue that has been revealed?” He said, “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if a man were killed in battle for the sake of Allaah, then brought back to life, then killed and brought back to life again, then killed, and he owed a debt, he would not enter Paradise until his debt was paid off.”

Narrated `Aisha:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah in the prayer saying, "O Allah, I seek refuge with you from all sins, and from being in debt." Someone said, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! (I see you) very often you seek refuge with Allah from being in debt. He replied, "If a person is in debt, he tells lies when he speaks, and breaks his promises when he promises."

Al-Hadid - 57:13

On the Day when the hypocrites men and women will say to the believers: "Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!" It will be said: "Go back to your rear! Then seek a light!" So a wall will be put up between them, with a gate therein. Inside it will be mercy, and outside it will be torment."
