The story of Ka’b ibn Malik is a story that all people should know to learn about the importance of honesty and sincerity. It’s a long story but a summary is below of the incident.

Ka'b ibn Malik رضي الله عنه was a companion of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. He is a great Sahaabi with many virtues, always supporting and siding with the Messenger of Allah. He was a prominent figure. When the Muslims were preparing for the Battle of Tabouk, Ka'b, despite being able and willing, did not join them. Everyone was to go except for those with a legitimate excuse. Ka’b was a wealthy man. When the Prophet’s army set out he had intention to join them and catch up but later on. What happened was because of his procrastination he lost the opportunity. He had his own ride and felt he could catch up any time, but he kept delaying it until it was too late. He had two wives and each night one of them would prepare for him. It eventually became too late to follow and catch up.

When the Prophet returned from the Battle of Tabouk, all those who did not join (without a legitimate excuse) came with many lies to excuse themselves. The exception was Ka'b ibn Malik, Murarah bin Rabee and Hilal bin Umayyah. Although there was a temptation to lie and make excuses to avoid the Prophet's displeasure, they chose to tell the truth. From the many that stayed behind they were the only three to tell the truth. They admitted they had no valid reason to remain behind. Instead of being angry, the Prophet appreciated their honesty. Yet, he informed them that he would have to await Allah's decree as they had disappointed and left their brothers by not taking part in the battle.

While waiting for Allah's decree, they went through a significant period of social boycott from the other Muslims as directed by the Prophet. This was a consequence for their action. A king wrote a letter to Ka’b offering him shelter and protection if he left Muhammad and went to him. Ka’b remained firm and steadfast on the path of Allah and threw the letter burning it in the oven. After 50 days, Allah revealed verses in the Quran acknowledging their honesty and granting them forgiveness.

And Allah has also turned in mercy to the three who had remained behind, whose guilt distressed them until the earth, despite its vastness, seemed to close in on them, and their souls were torn in anguish. They knew there was no refuge from Allah except in Him. Then He turned to them in mercy so that they might repent. Surely Allah alone is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.

Ka'b ibn Malik's story shows us that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم endorsed truthfulness, even when the truth was difficult to say and the liar had a chance to 'escape'. The story highlights the tremendous premium that Islam places on truthfulness and integrity.

This story is a long one with many details that one can get into, however this is a summary of the story. It truly isn’t a story that befits a summary, but the heart shatters even at the thought of it. They were separated from their most beloved and Allah revealed verses and reunited them with their most beloved - the Messenger of Allah. This story is filled with an immense amount of benefit and any one with a heart that hears this story is forced to weep from its intensity.
