STRIVE HARD BROTHERS AND SISTERS

Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her)

that when the last ten days of Ramadan began, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would stay up at night, wake his family and tie his lower garment tight.

According to Ahmad and Muslim:

“he would strive hard in worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan as he did not do at other times.”

The difference between forgiveness (maghfirah) and pardon (‘afw)

⚪️Abu Haamid al-Ghazaali (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Al-‘Afuww (the Pardoner) is the One Who erases bad deeds and overlooks sins. This divine name is similar in meaning to al-Ghafoor (the Forgiving), but the meaning goes further, for forgiveness reflects the meaning of concealing, whereas pardon reflects the meaning of erasing, and erasing goes further than concealing.

End quote from al-Maqsad al-Asna (p. 140).

⚪️Ibn Jazziy (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Pardon (‘afw) means not bringing a person to account for sin.

Forgiveness (maghfirah) means, in addition to that, concealing.

Mercy (rahmah) includes all of that, in addition to bestowing blessings.

End quote from at-Tasheel (1/143).
Ar-Raazi said in his Tafseer (7/124):

⚪️Al-‘Askari said in al-Furooq (413-414):

The difference between pardon and forgiveness:

Forgiveness (maghfirah) implies the waiving of punishment, and the waiving of punishment implies that the reward is inevitable, so no one deserves forgiveness except the believer who is deserving of reward. Hence this word is only used in relation to Allah, so it is said: May Allah forgive you (Ghafar Allahu laka), and it is not said: May Zayd forgive you, except very rarely…

Pardon (‘afw) implies waiving of blame and condemnation, but it does not imply that reward is inevitable. Hence this word may be used in relation to people, so it may be said: Zayd pardoned (‘afa) ‘Amr; but if he pardons him, he does not have to reward him.

However, because these words are very close in meaning, they overlap, and when speaking of the attributes of Allah, may He be exalted, they may be used to refer to the same thing. So it may be said that Allah pardoned him (‘Afa Allahu ‘anhu) and He forgave him (Ghara lahu), meaning the same thing.

What comes after the two words supports what we say. If you say, He pardoned him, this implies removal of something from him; if you say, He forgave him, that implies affirming something for him.

End quote.

⚪️Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Pardon implies waiving His rights in their case and forgiving them.

Forgiveness implies protecting them from the evil of their sin, turning to them [in mercy] and being pleased with them, in contrast to mere pardon, for the Pardoner may pardon, but He may not turn [in mercy] to the one whom He pardons and He may not be pleased with him.

Pardon is mere overlooking, whereas forgiveness is kindness, grace and generosity.

End quote from Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa (14/140).

Thus it becomes clear that forgiveness goes further than pardon, according to the correct view, because of what it implies of kindness and generosity.

As for the view that forgiveness refers to Allah pardoning you for sin whilst leaving it in your record, and that forgiveness refers to overlooking it and also erasing it from your record, there is no evidence for that.

And Allah knows best.

Day 28 🕌

Ghafir 40:7

Those (angels) who bear the Throne (of Allah) and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah) (saying): "Our Lord! You comprehend all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repent and follow Your Way, and save them from the torment of the blazing Fire!

Pitter and patter
In the last third of the night

Pouring torrents,
A breathtaking sight

Lightning and thunder,
Signs of His Might

The bedrooms are dark,
But the hearts are alight

Tearful supplications
,
To be guided aright

Cheeks are soaked,
Like the earth outside

Īmān swelling,
As if the high tide

If the skies weep in His fear,
My eyes shall do the same

May the sins be washed away,
In the Ramadān rains

Narrated Abu Huraira:
One day while the Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Gabriel came and asked, "What is faith?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, 'Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His Apostles, and to believe in Resurrection." Then he further asked, "What is Islam?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "To worship Allah Alone and none else, to offer prayers perfectly to pay the compulsory charity (Zakat) and to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." Then he further asked, "What is Ihsan (perfection)?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you." Then he further asked, "When will the Hour be established?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "The answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its portents.
1. When a slave (lady) gives birth to her master.
2. When the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the construction of higher buildings. And the Hour is one of five things which nobody knows except Allah.
The Prophet (ﷺ) then recited: "Verily, with Allah (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour--." (31. 34) Then that man (Gabriel) left and the Prophet (ﷺ) asked his companions to call him back, but they could not see him. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "That was Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion." Abu 'Abdullah said: He (the Prophet) considered all that as a part of faith.

Mistakes have piled,
into mountains they’ve grown,
heart was always hard,
but now it’s pure stone.

I’ve felt shame before,
but this one is like no other,
crippling in lowliness,
on the night of Al-Qadr

How bold could a slave be,
to raise his hands and request
an abode by the the Throne,
while never put to the test?

By what virtue do I raise these hands,
when they carry only my sins?
and I beseech His salvation,
without action of my limbs?

“Mercy! Just your Mercy!”
What else should I speak,
while it is the key to Your Gardens,
which I desperately seek?

💔 29th Ramadan...

How swiftly has the month gone.
What have we achieved so far?
Did we better ourselves or did we succumb more into the sins and darkness?
One more night and day (bi-idhnillah) to chase after purification and the love of Allah..

May Allah grant us tawfiq in achieving in His Pardon, Forgiveness and Mercy.
