The father is the provider and protector.

As such, he must protect and provide for his wife and children.
When having a newborn, providing and protecting includes making sure mom gets enough food and water, and rest.

While you're at work, she's handling a baby and maybe even other children with all that entails.

It's very easy to adopt the mindset of "there's not much I can do", because there's always a lot fathers can do to alleviate some tiredness or chores off a postpartum mama.

Each family should discuss this and figure out what works best for them.

Fathers, remember you're not only the sperm donor nor the ATM.
Be involved.

Like nah guys she's not gonna be baking cakes and getting round to dusting the ornaments, postpartum is brutal she's having a 24/7 mega period for 6 weeks, at the very least, barring any tearing, prolapse, anaemia and/or major surgery. Women in the Traditional past were confined to rest up in bed for 40days and the only reason husbands didn't have to help was cuz everyone still lived in the same village as their female relatives. Not the case nowadays often. Can't hack it? Stay single.

The husband and wife should be similar to the hand and the eye. When the hand hurts, the eyes should be crying. And when the eyes cry, the hand should wipe away the tears.
