The crisis suffered by the Spanish far right in the early 1980s led to its marginalization. In this context, proposals appeared, such as Nuevo Socialismo, which sought to transform the nostalgic discourse of Francoism by proclaiming a regeneration and the creation of an alternative movement of rupture. Little by little, this network built a discourse with innovative themes and proclamations previously unheard of in far-right circles. In the 1990s, the propaganda work carried out by publications such as Tribuna de Europa, the embryo of the Asociación Cultural Alternativa Europea (AE), a collective created in Barcelona in the early 1990s that advocated the “third way”, a political model based on the Russian “national-Bolshevik” movement that sought to bring together right-wing and left-wing activists in an anti-system front, was relevant.

The new organization became the precedent of the Liga Social Republicana, embryo of the Movimiento Social Republicano (MSR), a political party that became the standard-bearer in the State of this neo-fascist renewal current that called itself “national-revolutionary”. Despite its meager membership, it carried out intense proselytism in the streets. The iconographic amalgam visible in the propaganda, which mixed the effigy of Che Guevara with the Celtic cross, evidenced the transformative will. In 2003 Llopart was convicted of a crime against fundamental rights of which the Supreme Court later acquitted him. The MSR combined activism with the presentation of candidacies in the successive elections, elections in which its results were migrated. On the other hand, it managed to carve out a place for itself on the international extremist agenda, as demonstrated by its participation in the Alliance of European National Movements (AENM), a group created in 2009 that brings together European far-right groups.

In 2014, the MSR suffered a split following the participation of party members in an occupation of a building in Zaragoza, the Hogar Social, without the permission of the leaders. This led to the departure of Llopart, who created the group Soberanía y Libertad (SyL). The leadership of the MSR was left in the hands of Jordi de la Fuente.
