In chapter thirty-three Giussani recalls that the fascist leaders who sought asylum in 1945—at least those he had the opportunity to know and listen to—were exponents of a political doctrine at variance with the familiar one based on prewar contacts with Mussolini’s Italy. After being betrayed by the king and by Marshal Pietro Badoglio, who surrendered the country to the Anglo-Saxon invaders, Mussolini had escaped from prison to found in northern Italy his so-called Socialist Republic of Saló. Representing a return to the socialist origins of Italian fascism, his new doctrine acknowledged the error of courting the support of privileged sectors among the Italian nobility and capitalist oligarchy. That, and the abandonment of the movement’s socialist objectives, according to Giussani, were the principal mistakes Perón was not about to repeat.
