"The era of capitulating to coercion by the communist Chinese is over," Hegseth said while delivering prepared remarks earlier in the day.
"[China's] growing and adversarial control of strategic land and critical infrastructure in this hemisphere cannot and will not stand," he added.
Hegseth, who has been in Panama City for a three-day security conference with the host nation, later made the expanded partnership announcement during a joint press conference with Panamanian Public Security Minister Frank Abrego.
"The Panama Canal is key terrain that must be secured by Panama, with America, and not China," Hegseth said.
He added that, just prior to the news conference, the U.S. and Panama signed a memorandum of understanding related to cooperative security activities in the region and that the signing of an additional declaration related to the security and operation of the Panama Canal would be forthcoming.
That declaration, Hegseth said, would provide a framework for U.S. warships and auxiliary ships to travel "first and free" through the canal.
"These documents reaffirm [the U.S. and Panama's] historic ties and outline how we will deepen our relationship and strengthen bilateral canal security cooperation," Hegseth said.

The figure reported by Trump yesterday did not include an existing 20% tariff.
The extra 20% is a fentanyl-related tariff that Trump previously imposed on China.

Crews used dogs and thermal cameras to search for victims, rescuing more than 180 survivors from the rubble, authorities said. Crews at the scene were still looking for victims and potential survivors, although no one has been found alive since Tuesday afternoon.
The legendary club was packed with musicians, professional athletes and government officials when dust began falling from the ceiling and into people’s drinks early Tuesday. Minutes later, the roof collapsed.

Migrations from other parties – esp. CDU/CSU – to AfD are sticky. For a time last year, the novel Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) pulled some AfD voters away, but many of those have returned, and others have come too. This is not a temporary blip.
German politics are different now, and they will stay different whatever happens – whether the AfD are banned or not, however long the firewall persists. (IMHO ban proceedings become more likely but their success less likely, the stronger AfD get).

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday floated the idea of US troops returning to Panama to “secure” its strategically vital canal, a suggestion that would face fierce local opposition.
During a visit to Panama, Hegseth suggested that “by invitation” the United States could “revive” military bases or naval air stations and rotate deployments of US troops to an isthmus the United States invaded 35 years ago.

This wasn’t 3D chess—it was a panic stop and the end of another amateur hour.
