"War cuts new financial channels"
Americans, Beijing, Washington and the Fed are reacting to developments in the trade war as they come. But these reactions are best understood as responses to an emerging world order, in particular one where the financial flows of the previous world order are, or soon will be, no longer reliable due to geopolitical fragmentation.
This sets the stage for Zoltan Pozsar's War Finance, which is already underway, to be fully realized.
War Finance includes but goes beyond the Fed's balance sheet policy (QE) and the Treasury's fiscal policy (stimulus) - it encompasses structural changes in how capital is allocated, how reserves are managed and when intervention in markets is due. Its focus is less on supporting a global financial empire and more about securing the onshore credit needs of private industry, be it semiconductor lithography, energy production or steel manufacturing.
In this regime, the lines between fiscal and monetary policy begin to blur. War Finance would call for the Fed and the Treasury to officially fuse into a single framework, where policy is most powerful, which was the case during World War II when the former explicitly supported the latter.
The US is not currently outfitted for War Finance, as fiscal and monetary policy continue to diverge due to obvious political differences, but the Trump administration clearly recognizes the necessity. It will take an implosion before both recognize with absolute clarity that the old paradigm can no longer be relied on, and with that implosion will follow better choreography, as it always does in a crisis.

📱🇺🇸 Trump administration says it will exclude some electronics from reciprocal tariffs
The Trump administration late Friday said it would exclude electronics like smartphones and laptops from reciprocal tariffs, a move that could help keep the prices down for popular consumer electronics that aren’t usually made in the U.S.
It would also benefit big tech companies like Apple and Samsung and chip makers like Nvidia, setting the stage for a likely tech stock rally on Monday.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said items like smartphones, laptops, hard drives, flat-panel monitors and some chips would qualify for the exemption. Machines used to make semiconductors are excluded too. That means they won’t be subject to the current 145% tariffs levied on China or the 10% baseline tariffs elsewhere.

Three Observations:
(1) The patrol on April 11 was the third patrol this month, nine days after the "Strait Thunder 2025A" large-scale drill.
(2) Among the four patrols in April 2024, only one had more than 30 aircraft sorties, but all three patrols this year exceeded 30 sorties.
(3) The joint readiness patrols in April 2024 did not reach eastern Taiwan, but all three patrols this April operated in the eastern part of Taiwan, with this time flying south from the airspace between Taiwan’s Yilan and Japan's Yonaguni Island.
Note: The data has been updated by removing the long-range training on September 25, 2024, and adding the joint readiness patrol data from the two Joint Sword exercises in 2024, which aligns with the ROC National Security Bureau Director General's statement of 40 patrols in 2024. The sorties have also been revised to reflect the full-day data published by the Ministry of National Defense the following day, along with the addition of the number of warships.

Russian missiles struck the heart of the Ukrainian city of Sumy as people gathered to celebrate Palm Sunday, killing at least 34 people, officials said, in the second large-scale attack to claim civilian lives in just over a week.
The two ballistic missiles hit around 10:15 a.m. in a double-tap strike, officials said.
Images from the scene showed lines of black body bags on the side of the road, while more bodies were seen wrapped in foil blankets among the debris.
Video footage also showed fire crews fighting to extinguish the shells of burned-out cars among the rubble from damaged buildings.
The dead included two children, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said in a statement. A further 117 people were wounded, including 15 children, it said.
Some videos published by netizens on the aftermath show many bodies of civilians laying on the streets.
A bus full of people was also hit.
It happens as United States continuously tries to force Russia into a temporary ceasefire with Ukraine .
