🇻🇦 - With considerable speculation taking place around Francis' health, here are the runners and riders for the next papal conclave:
Cdl. Tagle - Liberal, ex-Archbishop of Manila, seen as the "Asian Francis," supports Rome's stance on LGBT and divorced couples.
Cdl. Erdő - Conservative, Primate (chief bishop) of Hungary, supports Orbán, has spoken out against Francis over migration, divorce.
Cdl. Turkson - Conservative, been in Rome since 2009 so has an inside advantage.
Cdl. Sarah - Long-standing hope of traditionalists, known for support of the Latin Mass and staunch criticism of the current pope, but over 80 - so can't vote.
Cdl. Parolin - Vatican secretary of state, seen as Francis' number two, would be the first Italian to sit in St Peter's since John Paul I. Little is really known about his personal beliefs.
Cdl. Zuppi - Arguably the most liberal candidate, close collaborator with American leftist, pro-gay and anti-Trump priest James Martin, allegedly blessed a gay wedding per conservative Catholic media in Italy.
Cdl. Pizzaballa - Moderate, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, advocate for peace in the Levant war, supports inter-Christian outreach.
Cdls. Eijk (of Utrecht) Aborelius (of Stockholm) and Ranjith (of Colombo) have also been suggested as potential candidates.
Analysts suspect the next conclave will be mainly between Tagle and Erdő, with both representing their wings of the Church. Nonetheless, Pizzaballa, in our opinion, could emerge as a compromise candidate.
It's worth bearing in mind that anyone can be elected pope - this list is just a guide. John Paul II, when he went into the 1979 conclave as Archbishop Wojtyla of Krakow, was completely unknown outside Poland.

🇱🇧🇻🇦✝️ President Aoun mourns Pope Francis: "A loss for all of humanity. We in Lebanon feel the loss of a dear friend and staunch supporter. The late Pope always carried Lebanon in his heart and prayers, and called on the world to support Lebanon in its ordeal."

🇮🇹🇻🇦✝️ Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the death of Pope Francis: A great man has left our world.
In statement on X, the Libertarian leader said:
FAREWELL
It is with profound sorrow that I learned this sad morning that Pope Francis, Jorge Bergoglio, passed away today and is now resting in peace. Despite differences that seem minor today, having been able to know him in his goodness and wisdom was a true honor for me.
As President, as an Argentine, and, fundamentally, as a man of faith, I bid farewell to the Holy Father and I communion with all of us who are here today with this sad news.
RIP.

The members of the National Assembly were wise to reject a law that would have made France the first country in the world to strip its citizens of their right to privacy. Even countries that many Europeans view as lacking in freedoms have never banned encryption. Why?
Because it’s technically impossible to guarantee that only the police can access a backdoor. Once introduced, a backdoor can be exploited by other parties — from foreign agents to hackers. As a result, the private messages of all law abiding citizens can get compromised.
Aimed at preventing drug trafficking, the law wouldn’t have helped fight crime anyway. Even if mainstream encrypted apps had been weakened by a backdoor, criminals could still communicate securely through dozens of smaller apps — and become even harder to trace due to VPNs.
This is why, as I’ve said before, Telegram would rather exit a market than undermine encryption with backdoors and violate basic human rights. Unlike some of our competitors, we don’t trade privacy for market share.
In it’s 12-year history, Telegram has never disclosed a single byte of private messages. In accordance with the EU Digital Services Act, if provided with a valid court order, Telegram would only disclose the IP addresses and phone numbers of criminal suspects — not messages.
Last month, freedom prevailed. But it was a reminder: we must keep explaining to lawmakers that encryption isn’t built to protect criminals — it protects the privacy and safety of ordinary people. Losing that protection would be tragic.
The battle is far from over. This month, the European Commission proposed a similar initiative to add backdoors to messaging apps. No country is immune to the slow erosion of freedoms. Every day, those freedoms come under attack — and every day, we must defend them.
