🇵🇦💥🌊 — Panama is going through one of the worst droughts in its history, which has drastically reduced the water levels of the lakes that supply the Panama Canal, the interoceanic highway that connects the Atlantic with the Pacific and which is key to global shipping.
According to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), the drought is "unprecedented" and is related to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which causes higher temperatures and scarce rainfall in the region. Gatun Lake, the canal's main reservoir, has reached record low levels and is expected to continue to decline in the coming months.
The Panama Canal is a vital route for international trade, allowing ships to avoid the long and dangerous journey around Cape Horn, at the southern tip of South America.
If the drought worsens, shippers could be forced to look for alternatives, such as going directly from Asia to the West Coast of the United States or going through the Suez Canal in Egypt.
