🛢 📈 🚢 Oil and gas prices jump as BP stops Red Sea shipments because of attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels
🔶️ Oil rose sharply on the news. Brent crude, the global benchmark, was up 1.1% to $77 a barrel. US oil rose 1% to $72 a barrel.
🔶️ The news disrupted the entire energy market: Futures prices for Europe’s benchmark natural gas contract surged nearly 8%, before paring gains to trade 5.5% higher by early afternoon Monday, at €35 ($38.20) per megawatt hour. That’s still well below the all-time high of €320 ($349.24) per megawatt hour seen in August 2022, at the height of the continent’s energy crisis, but a clear sign of disruption to energy prices following the attacks.
🔶️ “This means that one week of meaningful capacity rerouting could have ripple effects for several months ahead, after a lag of a few weeks,” UBS analysts wrote in a note Sunday, highlighting that around 30% of global container trade passes through the Suez Canal.

The Red Sea is now largely closed to traffic, affecting 8.8 million bpd of daily oil transit, and nearly 380 million tons of daily cargo transit. Global traffic now will be rerouted around Cape of Good Hope, adding on average 40% to voyage distance and even more in expense.
The collective vessel market share of MSC, Hapag Lloyd, and Maersk — each of which are recent victims to piracy attacks and have decided to totally suspend voyages via the Red Sea — is approximately 40% of global cargo trade. Transit times from Asia to the Mediterranean were at a threshold last month, and are now expected to rise up to an additional 10-14 days.
Meanwhile, global sea freight face additional risks in the Western hemisphere as drought conditions plague the Panama canal.
Sue Terpilowski of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, which represents companies concerned with supply chains, told the BBC about the likely spike in costs after four of the top five companies in the world suspended operations in the area:
“It’s security to the crew, to the ship itself and also insurance policies. Premiums are now going sky high if they can get insurance at all, so it’s going to have serious implications on stock levels, on costs and the whole dynamics of supply chains.”
The acceleration of de-globalization is leading to a surge of uncertainty along major global maritime routes and transport expenses.

Venezuelan Armed Forces are prepared for any scenario in dispute with Guyana
The Minister of Defense of Venezuela, Vladimir Padrino, reiterated this Sunday that the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) is "prepared" for "any scenario" in the midst of the dispute with Guyana over the Essequibo, after both countries met on Thursday and agree not to threaten each other or use force.
«It was possible to return to the path of dialogue to resolve the conflict over the Essequibo territory. "This (...) does not mean at all a minimal renunciation of our claim, of our non-recognition of the International Court of Justice in this matter and much less does it mean that the Bolivarian National Armed Force is not prepared for any scenario," Padrino said.

⚓️ 🇺🇸 🚢 Traffic in the Red Sea is piling up between Sudan and Jeddah waiting for military action. - Sal Mercogliano
🔶️ We have now seen nearly all the major container lines and major oil tanker firms announce they will not transit the Babel Mandeb
🔶️ This means that the Houthi are currently strangling the most significant trade route on the planet.
🔶️ The Houthi are not the recognized government of Yemen, yet this non-state actor has completely disrupted the global supply chain.
🔶️ Even US-flagged ships that receive subsidies from @US_TRANSCOM @DOTMARAD, and contracted to carry @DeptofDefense cargo are refusing to transit the Bab el-Mandeb, even with US escorts for fear that their ships may be damaged, captured or sunk.
🔶️ This arguement by @MaerskLineLtd and @ARCships raises serious questions about the ability of sealift in a potential peer-to-peer conflict in the Pacific if they are concerned about the Houthi. This will alter any warplans set by @INDOPACOM @MSCSealift @US_TRANSCOM.
🔶️ Now we are witnessing a non-state actor - the Houthi - forcing the world's trade to divert from the most dense ocean trade route on the planet, because the ocean carriers have deemed it to dangerous
🔶️ We witnessed the impact of supply chain disruptions during COVID off the ports of LA/Long Beach.
🔶️ Now the ocean carriers, with power similar to the British East India Company of old, are mandating actions by the world governments and their military to make the seas safe.

🇮🇱⚔️ 🇱🇧 Israel is planning a “new ground war against Hezbollah” in Lebanon, writes The Times.
The plan for the invasion of southern Lebanon has already been developed. The IDF says it wants to push Hezbollah north to the Litani River, a line of symbolic significance for both sides.
The publication writes that such a plan carries risks of further escalation of the war in the Middle East and contradicts calls for restraint on the part of Western allies. The initial risk of Hezbollah's invasion eased in the fall when its leader Hassan Nasrallah said the group would not launch a major offensive unless provoked or Hamas was on the brink of a crushing defeat.

Russian hacker group Lockbit has claimed responsibility for a major ransomware attack that has hit public bodies in Italy using Westpole's services over the last 10 days, sources said on Monday.
The hackers encrypted databases and made them inaccessible and sent cryptocurrency ransom demands to the provider hosting the services of 1,300 Italian public-administration bodies, the sources said.
These include payroll and electronic invoicing systems.
