The U.S. Secret Service has dismantled a clandestine telecommunications threat network in the New York tristate area just as world leaders gathered for the United Nations General Assembly. Agents seized more than 300 co-located SIM servers and roughly 100,000 SIM cards, which officials say could have been weaponized to disrupt the city’s cellular networks, disable emergency communications, or provide secure channels for espionage.

Investigators believe the system had the potential to cripple cell towers or launch denial-of-service attacks, effectively flooding networks and cutting off phone access for thousands.

Forensic analysts are now combing through data equivalent to “100,000 cell phones,” including call records, text messages, and IP logs.

The operation was carried out within 35 miles of U.N. headquarters, days before the General Assembly. The Secret Service said the threat was imminent and had the capacity to seriously disrupt protective operations around visiting heads of state.

While officials have not yet identified any suspects, they confirmed that the seized devices had been used to communicate with known criminal and nation-state actors.
