🇷🇺📈🥇Russia gains $216 billion in gold rally, replacing lost assets

Russia has reaped a windfall from a surge in gold prices since the start of its war in Ukraine, generating gains on a scale comparable to the sovereign reserves frozen in Europe over President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

The value of the Bank of Russia’s gold holdings has increased by more than $216 billion since February 2022, according to Bloomberg calculations. At the same time, the central bank has largely refrained from both major purchases of the metal and using its gold reserves during that period, despite the loss of access to foreign securities and currencies blocked under sanctions.

In December, European Union countries approved extending a freeze on around €210 billion ($244 billion) of Russian sovereign assets held in the bloc.

🇮🇳❌💰💰 India bans privacy coins like Monero and Zcash to fight money laundering

India's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) has instructed reporting entities to refrain from permitting deposits or withdrawals of privacy-focused cryptocurrencies such as Monero and Zcash.

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) says these coins make it too easy to hide transactions, which could help with money laundering or terror funding.
Now, all 49 registered crypto platforms must follow strict new rules announced on January 8, 2026.

According to a report by ET, Privacy cryptocurrencies such as Monero, Zcash, and Dash were highlighted by industry participants as being affected by the restrictions. Regulators argue that the cryptographic features used by these tokens, including stealth addresses and transaction obfuscation, pose challenges for anti-money laundering compliance.

Under the FIU’s framework, exchanges are expected to treat dealings in such tokens as non-permissible within their risk-mitigation policies.
