🇷🇺🇺🇸📰 AP: House Intelligence Committee chair warns of a serious national security threat

➡️ The Republican head of the House Intelligence Committee urged the Biden administration on Wednesday to declassify information about what he called a serious national security threat.

➡️ Rep. Mike Turner gave no details about the nature of the threat, and the Biden administration also declined to address it. But several leading lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, cautioned against being overly alarmed.

➡️ A senior congressional aide said he understood that the threat relates to a space-deployed Russian anti-satellite weapon that may or may not already have been deployed.

➡️ Such a weapon could pose a major danger to U.S. satellites that transmit billions of bytes of data on an hourly basis.

➡️ The aide, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said it was not yet clear if the Russian weapon has nuclear capability, but said that is the fear.

🇷🇺🇺🇸🌐 — Washington Examiner: US fears Russia preparing to put nuclear weapons in space

➡️ It appears that Russia is in the process of deploying (via multiple recent satellite launches), or is preparing to deploy, an anti-satellite-based nuclear weapons system into space. Concerns have escalated amid Russian military-related satellite launches, the most recent of which occurred last week.

➡️ My sources say that this is a Russian anti-satellite weapons capability designed to destroy or degrade U.S. and allied satellite constellations. Radiation produced by a nuclear explosion would likely cause widespread disruption to these constellations.

➡️ As Lt. Col. Robert Vincent noted in 2022, “Most satellites with a line of sight to the nuclear detonation will be destroyed from the resulting x-rays. Military space capabilities for command and control along with reconnaissance assets may still function for a period following the detonation, but the economic impact of degraded informational space products will be immediate.”

🇦🇪🇺🇸 UAE restricts US ability to launch retaliatory airstrikes against Iran proxies

Some Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates, are increasingly restricting the U.S. from using military facilities on their soil to launch retaliatory airstrikes on Iranian proxies, according to four people familiar with the issue.

Amid a rising civilian death toll in Gaza, several Arab countries, particularly those “attempting a detente with Iran,” are “increasingly restricting” the U.S. and partners from conducting self-defense operations from their soil, according to the U.S. official. This includes limits on retaliatory strikes against attacks in Iraq, Syria, and the Red Sea, the official said.

Certain Arab countries are restricting access to basing and overflight for the assets participating in these retaliatory strikes, the official said. It’s not clear how many countries are taking this action.

The reason the UAE in particular is doing this, per one of the Western officials, is “they don’t want to appear like they’re against Iran and they don’t want to appear too close to the West and Israel for public opinion reasons.” The UAE has in recent years also raised concerns about increasing attacks from the Houthis in Yemen. The rebel group has previously launched missiles into the UAE.

🇯🇵📉❗️ — Japanese Economy entered into recession!

➡️ Japan's economy unexpectedly contracted 0.4% on an annualised basis in October-December following the previous quarter's contraction, as consumption of clothing and eating out caused a decline in private consumption, Cabinet Office said on Thursday.

➡️ The annualised GDP figure translated into a quarterly decrease of 0.1%, confounding the median economist forecast of a rise of 0.3%.

➡️ Private consumption, which makes up more than half the economy, declined 0.2%, the Cabinet Office said, versus a 0.1% gain seen by economists.

Argentina closed 2023 with 211.4% inflation, the highest since 1990: the December CPI rose to 25.5%,

While these are horrible numbers they actually represent a significant inflationary slowdown compared to the beginning of December where inflation was estomated between 30% and 40% with a daily growth of around 1.4% daily, this has proven a small victory in the markets due to the success of the shock measures applied by the Economic Minister Caputo.

Argentina also surpasses Venezuela for the first time in more than 20 years and is already the highest in the region by a huge margin, inflation in 2024 will likewise remain significantly large but lower than the 2023 numbers with 2025 expected to drop massively to between 5 and 10%.
🇦🇷📉Milei manages to reduce hyperinflation: Prices in January rose by 20.6%, and inflation begins to decline two months into government

➡️ January's inflation was 20.6% and accumulated 254.2% over the past year, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC). This was the first full month with Javier Milei as President, after December saw an increase of 25.5% with 10 final days of Alberto Fernández

✔️ Thus, the January data implied a significant slowdown in price increases, confirming that Milei's plan to curb monetary issuance and completely eliminate the fiscal deficit is bearing fruit.

"The division with the highest increase in the month was Miscellaneous goods and services (44.4%), due to the increase in Personal care items. This was followed by Transportation (26.3%) – due to increases in public transportation and the carryover effect of rising fuel prices – and Communication (25.1%), due to the rise in telephone and internet services."

🛍 Additionally, it aligned with inflation in the City of Buenos Aires, which was 21.7% in January, according to the Buenos Aires Statistics and Census Directorate.

"The division with the greatest incidence in all regions was Food and non-alcoholic beverages (20.4%). Within the division, increases in Meats and derivatives and Bread and cereals stood out. The two divisions that recorded the smallest variations in January were Clothing and footwear (11.9%) and Education (0.9%)."
