House Democrats opened an investigation of Elon Musk’s SpaceX
🏛🇺🇸 ❗️ 👤 📡 — 🇺🇸 The Washington Post | Democrats probe Musk’s SpaceX, examining Russia’s alleged Starlink use | Lawmakers say Russia’s alleged use of Starlink terminals ‘poses a serious threat to Ukraine’s security, Ukrainian lives, and U.S. national security’ | March 7, 2024:
"House Democrats opened an investigation of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, examining whether the company implemented adequate safeguards to prevent Russia from deploying its Starlink satellite internet service in its war against Ukraine.
Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) sent a letter Wednesday night demanding that the company report complaints about potential illegal acquisitions of Starlink terminals, including in Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. The lawmakers said they were alarmed by Ukrainian intelligence officials’ allegations that Russian forces deployed the company’s terminals in eastern Ukraine, potentially running afoul of U.S. sanctions.
The lawmakers warned SpaceX’s president, Gwynne Shotwell, that Russia’s alleged use of Starlink “poses a serious threat to Ukraine’s security, Ukrainian lives, and U.S. national security”
“We are concerned that you may not have appropriate guardrails and policies in place,” Raskin and Garcia wrote in a letter exclusively obtained by The Washington Post.
The probe underscores how vital Starlink service has been to Ukraine’s war effort, providing the backbone of its digital communications on the battlefield since Russia invaded the country two years ago. SpaceX supplied Starlink terminals to Ukraine following a plea from Ukrainian government officials within hours of Russia’s attack. The Defense Department purchased 400 to 500 new terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, the letter says."

Governments of the European Union are engaged in wargames which simulate and foresee a global food crisis. A mix of major factors including the Russia-Ukraine war and impact on grain supplies there, as well as weather events like El Niño and La Niña and their impact on Latin American soy output, and the anti-EU farmers' protests which have disrupted supermarket supply chains, have been cause for alarm, European officials say. Of course there's also the example of how drastically a pandemic can interfere with supply chains. Panic buying was a trend and constant fear within the early months of the coronavirus crisis.
Bloomberg details of a conference held in Brussels last month that envisioned a 2024 to 2025 food shortage in Europe: "...over two days in central Brussels last month, some 60 European Union and government officials, food security experts, industry representatives and a few journalists gathered to confront the possibility of something barely on the radar a few years ago: a full-blown food crisis."
Piotr Magnuszewski, a systems modeler and game designer who helped put the conference gaming scenario together told participants to "Expect a level of chaos" and cautioned, "You may be confused at times and not have enough information."
As the report underscores, what's remarkable about this is the fact that a continent which stands out as among the best-fed regions in the world is now busy stress testing its food system.
Below are some of the scenarios put before participants in the wargaming event last month:
🔸 Harvest failures:
🔸 Palm oil exports cut:
🔸 Fertilizer crisis:
🔸 Unrest in the street as shortages hit locally:
🔸 Popular anger targets elites & corporations
As for "solutions" - interestingly conference participants were told (or rather took it as an assumption) that populations would have to be weaned off meat. Let them eat bugs?
"Day two started with a mindfulness session before focusing on policy proposals and any conclusions," the Bloomberg journalist in attendance wrote. "There was little objection to the idea that diets need to shift toward healthier options and away from meat. Questions loomed over how best to manage food reserves and monitor the level of stockpiles."

March 05, 2024 | March 6, 2024:
"LONDON, March 5 (Reuters) - One of Turkey's mid-sized Mediterranean oil terminals - the Dortyol terminal - will no longer accept Russian imports after receiving record volumes last year, amid an increase in sanctions pressure by the United States.
Turkey has become one of the biggest importers of Russian crude and fuel since 2022, after the West imposed sanctions on Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine. Russia responded by re-routing oil away from Europe and the U.S. to Asia, Turkey and Africa.
Global Terminal Services' (GTS), which operates the terminal in Turkey's southeastern Hatay province, said it had told its clients it would not accept any products from Russia.
"GTS decided to cut all possible connections to Russian oil and declared accordingly to its customers in late February 2024 that even if there is no breach of any laws, regulations or sanctions, it would not accept any product of Russian origin or any products loaded from Russian ports as an additional measure to the sanction rules in effect," GTS told Reuters.
It said that all pervious operations had been in full compliance with sanctions including the G7's price cap."

Huawei developing magneto-electric drive for cold storage.
A presentation at MWC24 in Barcelona by Huawei’s Dr Peter Zhou, president of the data storage product lines, introduced this coming product. He told the audience that it can reduce total connection cost by 20 percent compared to tape, and power consumption by 90 percent compared to hard drives.
“Huawei’s MED (magneto-electric disk) brings brand-new innovation against magnetic media. The first generation of MED will be as a big capacity disk. The rack capacity will be more than 10 PB and power consumption less than 2 KW. For the first generation of MED, we will position it mainly for archival storage. It will be released overseas about 2025H1.”
