"What is most alarming now is that literally any scenario is possible. We haven't experienced a situation like this since 1945. I know it sounds crushing, especially for people of the younger generation, but we must morally get used to the new era. We are in pre-war times. I'm not exaggerating. Every day it is more and more evident," he told El pais.
He also urged Europeans to spend more on defense. In particular, he reminded about the need to allocate at least 2% of GDP to defense, according to the fundamental principle of NATO.

🇺🇸🇲🇽 US, Mexico to partner on semiconductor supply chain development
The United States will partner with Mexico to explore semiconductor supply chain opportunities, the State Department said on Thursday, as the Biden administration pushes to reduce reliance on China and Taiwan for the technology.
The collaboration will take place as part of the U.S. CHIPS Act, a 2022 law that created a $500 million fund for developing the semiconductor supply chain through initiatives with allies and partners.
The partnership will begin with an assessment of Mexico's existing semiconductor industry, regulatory framework and workforce needs, the department added.

"TAIPEI -- China's Huawei Technologies said on Friday its net profit more than doubled in 2023, with revenue in all business segments rising on the year.
At 87 billion yuan ($12 billion), Huawei's net profit was the highest in the past five years, excluding 2021, when it recognized an undisclosed amount of gain from spinning off its budget smartphone line, Honor.
The numbers provide a strong sign that the company has been able to withstand a sustained crackdown by Washington that includes stringent export controls.
Huawei's resurgence in the domestic smartphone market, in particular, has put pressure on rivals, most notably Apple.
Once the world's second-largest smartphone maker, Huawei said revenue from its sanctions-hit consumer electronics business grew 17.3% versus 2022 to 251.5 billion yuan last year, and that the momentum is continuing into the first quarter of this year."

Zhurihe, also known as the Zhurihe Combined Tactics Training Base, is China's largest training base by physical size. Observers have compared it, together with its adjacent training ranges, to the U.S. Army's Fort Irwin in southern California and that base's associated sprawling National Training Center (NTC). The NTC is home to a large number of diverse facilities that also give the Army room to conduct large scale unit exercises covering a wide variety of combat scenarios. As with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment at the NTC, Zhurihe also has its own dedicated units to play the role of enemy forces during drills. These are known as the "Blue Army," a play on the Western term "Red Force" to refer to Opposing Forces during exercises.
By the mid-2000s, Zhurihe's facilities had significantly expanded in size and scope, with a heavy emphasis on features that would be used to prepare forces for what the U.S. military calls Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT). By the end of 2014, it had further grown to include the Taiwan-related structures, as well as other features to support larger exercises, including an associated operational air base with a more than 9,000-foot-long runway to the northwest and a huge railhead to allow the rapid movement of vehicles, heavy weapons, other equipment, and personnel to and from the site. All of this is visible in high-resolution satellite imagery of the area that The War Zone recently obtained.
Zhurihe's most interesting, unique, and curious features are found at the southern end of the base. This is where the huge full-size realistic urban training areas, as well as a mock air base, are situated.
A closeup of the Taipei section at Zhurihe. The building at the right mimics the Presidential Office Building, while the rectangular white structure in the upper middle is modeled after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.,

Chinese could shut down the Panama Canal.
"Nearly 6 percent of global trade and 57.5 percent of the cargo transported in container that ships from Asia to the East Coast of the United States passes through the Panama Canal. Today, this important infrastructure is the focus of great concern in political, economic, and academic sectors given the growing presence of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). “China has turned Panama into a geographic and commercial concentration center or strategic hub for its political, commercial, and military advance in the region,” Euclides Tapia, professor at the School of International Relations of the University of Panama, told Diálogo.
Sino-Panamanian commercial relations are long standing, however, only since 2017, when both nations strengthened diplomatic ties, did the influence and interference of the Asian country become noticeable. “I am not wrong in saying that since Panama broke relations with Taiwan to establish them with China the country’s independence has been extremely compromised,” Tapia said.
Since the beginning of the century, the PRC has infiltrated Latin America, overcoming physical and cultural barriers. It is now the region’s second largest trading partner. According to the World Economic Forum, in just two decades, its bilateral relations have increased 26-fold, from $12 billion in 2000 to $315 billion in 2020."

Backdoor in utility commonly used by Linux distros risks SSH compromise.
A backdoor was discovered in the xz compression utility commonly used in Linux distributions. Malicious code hidden in the utility package creates a critical supply chain threat that potentially exposes SSH services to unauthorized access.
Andres Freund, a principal software engineer at Microsoft, discovered the backdoor and reported it to Linux distributor Openwall Friday morning.
Malicious .m4 files added to the xz tarballs in version 5.6.0, which was released on Feb. 24, contained automake instructions for building the compression library liblzma that modified its functions to allow for unauthorized access.
