NOW - French embassy in Niger is under siege. Any attack on French nationals or interests in Niger will provoke an "immediate and stringent" reaction from France, the French presidency said in a statement.
Some of the coup supporters outside the French embassy chant "Long live Russia", "Long live Putin" and "Down with France", AFP news agency reports.
UPDATE - West African ECOWAS bloc suspends ties with Niger and authorizes use of force if president not reinstated within a week.

The Value Of Agriculture To European Economies
According to World Bank figures, Agriculture, forestry and fishing account for around 1.6 percent of the EU's gross domestic product.
However, as Statista's Martin Armstrong reports, there is wide variation in the continent though, with Germany, for example, one of the least economically dependent countries in Europe on agriculture, alongside the United Kingdom (0.7 percent) and Switzerland (0.6 percent).

Such low values are common for highly developed nations, which generate the majority of their value added in the service sector.
In Germany, for example, the service sector accounts for around two-thirds of gross value added.
Agriculture is significantly more important in Albania (17.7 percent of GDP), Ukraine (10.6 percent) and the Republic of Moldova (10.6 percent).

🇮🇹 Italy's economy unexpectedly contracted
Italy's economy unexpectedly contracted by 0.3% in Q2 compared to the previous three months – much worse than the zero growth that analysts had expected, and in contrast to overall expansion in the eurozone.
The slump was attributed to a drop in domestic demand, while net exports failed to contribute to growth. Industry and agriculture were particularly hit.
Italy's contraction casts a shadow over Giorgia Meloni, who just last week touted the economic policies of her government as driving faster expansion than France and Germany.
Furthermore, Meloni reportedly informed Biden personally last week that her government would exit China's Belt and Road Initiative to focus more on ties with the US.
The International Monetary Fund now projects that Italy's GDP will grow only 1.1% this year, down from a 1.4% forecast last month.
Weaker growth prospects and higher borrowing costs will make it more difficult for Meloni to keep Italy's mammoth national debt in check.
The debt-to-GDP ratio remains above 140% and is likely to stay little changed over the coming year, according to European Commission forecasts.
