🔶️ President Joe Biden will extend major non-NATO ally status to Kenya during the three-day state visit by the African country’s leader this week, two U.S. officials confirmed.
🔶️ Kenya will become the first sub-Saharan nation to receive the designation, which allows the recipient country to obtain more sophisticated weaponry from the United States and engage in closer security cooperation.
🇷🇺 🇨🇳 The growing bond between Washington and Nairobi comes as the Biden administration worries about China’s growing sway on the African continent, in addition to Russia’s ties with Kenya. Even though Biden has yet to travel to the continent, as he promised to do, the major non-NATO ally status might serve as a consolation and sign of intent.

The U.S. has received up to 50 requests for individual licenses from companies aiming to do business in Venezuela's oil industry, following the expiration of a general authorization granted last year to the sector, the chief of the U.S. mission for Venezuela said late on Wednesday.
The U.S. Treasury Department in mid-April said it would not renew the broader general license that had eased restrictions to conduct oil and gas business in Venezuela as the government had not met conditions for a competitive presidential election. Washington committed instead to issuing individual licenses for companies in the oil sector.

Sources: Putin wants Ukraine ceasefire on current frontlines
"MOSCOW/LONDON, May 24 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to halt the war in Ukraine with a negotiated ceasefire that recognises the current battlefield lines, four Russian sources told Reuters, saying he is prepared to fight on if Kyiv and the West do not respond.
Three of the sources, familiar with discussions in Putin's entourage, said the veteran Russian leader had expressed frustration to a small group of advisers about what he views as Western-backed attempts to stymie negotiations and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's decision to rule out talks.
"Putin can fight for as long as it takes, but Putin is also ready for a ceasefire – to freeze the war," said another of the four, a senior Russian source who has worked with Putin and has knowledge of top level conversations in the Kremlin."

"Since 2010, the majority of China’s cross-border payments, like those of many countries, had been settled in U.S. dollars (USD). As of the first quarter of 2023, that’s no longer the case.

As of March 2024, over half (52.9%) of Chinese payments were settled in RMB while 42.8% were settled in USD. This is double the share from five years previous. According to Goldman Sachs, foreigners’ increased willingness to trade assets denominated in RMB significantly contributed to de-dollarization in favor of China’s currency. Also, early last year, Brazil and Argentina announced that they would begin allowing trade settlements in RMB."

Europe is hoping its own blockchain will help it break free from dependence on US technology.
On Tuesday, the European Union set up a new organisation designed to introduce blockchain infrastructure and revamp record keeping and the transfer of data transfer between the bloc’s 27 member states.
The launch took place during a meeting of telecommunications ministers at the European Council in Brussels. Lawmakers also rubber stamped the EU’s landmark law on artificial intelligence.

Young people are the most right-wing generation in Germany, and a eurodance rave classic with reworked lyrics calling for foreigners to be deported is emerging as an unlikely youth anthem, sending the country’s political police scrabbling to intervene.
German youth are increasingly right wing and the anti-mass migration AfD party is now the most popular among 14 to 29-year-olds, recent polling shows. While this may have an impact at the ballot box — Germany and its neighbours vote in the EU elections in two weeks — it is also emerging in culture.
German politicians and media have reacted with outrage several times in the past year as video clips of young people dancing and singing along to a song proclaiming “Deutschland den Deutschen, Ausländer Raus”, ‘Germany for the Germans, foreigners out’, keep emerging. The latest such instance which has again set fingers wagging comes from an apparently exclusive nightclub on the German holiday island of Sylt.
Germany’s federal security police, which normally concerns itself with terrorism and international crime gangs is investigating the young people singing, reports Die Welt. German journalist and “diversity consultant” Ferda Ataman who was appointed the government’s Federal Commissioner for Anti-Discrimination in 2022 said the song being sung showed “people are being discriminated against and degraded”.
The song, Ataman said, is “pure racism, which is increasingly ingraining itself in all social groups and age groups and is being openly expressed.”
Welt also cited Green Party state government Integration Minister Aminata Touré who expressed her opinion that singing the song could not be dismissed as a “boyish prank”, but that it had to be seen as “Nazi yelling… They should be ashamed of themselves! Criminal investigations must now follow.”
