🇧🇴❗️ Crisis in Bolivia: Business leaders urge Luis Arce to implement regulatory changes to reverse the “critical situation” of natural gas

➡️ The Bolivian Chamber of Hydrocarbons and Energy (CBHE) has warned about the "critical situation" in the sector due to the decline in natural gas production and royalties. They have also asked the government of Luis Arce for regulatory changes to encourage investments in exploration and exploitation.

📝 The CBHE expressed its "concern" over the progressive decline in gas production and stated that there is a "critical situation," despite efforts by companies and the state-owned Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) to develop projects to mitigate this decline.

🔽 Bolivia's natural gas production decreased from about 22,187 million cubic meters (mm3) in 2014 to 13,390 mm3 in 2023, while export royalties fell from more than $6 billion in 2014 to $2.043 billion last year, according to official data.

The Arce government has been implementing the ‘Upstream Reactivation Plan (exploration and production)’ for several years. This plan includes 42 exploratory projects in various regions to increase hydrocarbon production, which could yield positive results in the future.

💸 Some experts have warned that the shortage of fuels and the rising cost of some foods are due to the lack of dollars, which is caused by the drop in income from natural gas exports.

Recently, Bolivian President Luis Arce faced criticism for saying that natural gas, which had been the country's economic mainstay for several years, "has been exhausted" and blamed previous administrations for not conducting new explorations.

At this moment, the new Minister of Culture, Raúl Castillo, will proceed with the dismissal of more than 300 employees from the Ministry, who promote agendas that are not compatible with the vision of this Government.

Additionally, we will save public funds in the process.

The people have chosen a path, and that is the path we will take.

🇲🇽🇨🇳Mexico to seek deal over disputed mining concession with Chinese lithium firm

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday that his government will seek an agreement with Chinese lithium miner Ganfeng while still defending Mexico's rights, after the firm filed an arbitration case over a disputed concession.

Lopez Obrador did not flesh out a potential agreement that could resolve the dispute, but instead stressed his government's successful push in 2022 to nationalize Mexico's lithium industry, which reserves the mineral's future production for the state.

The president suggested the dispute with Ganfeng traces back to confusion over how concessions were granted by previous governments.

🗣"That's because we believe that the country had previously given out, and we think gave out (mining concessions) in a generic way, not specifically for lithium but instead for mining and we don't think it applies," he said.
