Saudi Arabia privately hinted earlier this year it might sell some European debt holdings if the Group of Seven decided to seize almost $300 billion of Russia’s frozen assets, people familiar with the matter said.
The kingdom’s finance ministry told some G-7 counterparts of its opposition to the idea, which was meant to support Ukraine, with one person describing it as a veiled threat. The Saudis specifically mentioned debt issued by the French treasury, two of the people said.

🇵🇦Ruling could permit a new reservoir for the Panama Canal, but it could take 6 years
A court ruling could permit the construction of a new reservoir to feed the water-starved Panama Canal, but the project might take six years to build, the managers of the waterway said Monday.
For years, Panama has wanted to build another reservoir to supplement the main supply of water from Lake Gatun, but a 2006 regulation prohibited the waterway from expansion outside its traditional watershed. A recent ruling by Panama’s Supreme Court allowed a re-interpretation of the boundaries, possibly clearing the way for work.
Authorities will still have to consult with and gain acceptance of the project from inhabitants of the new site around the Indio River basin. There are approximately 12,000 people living in about 200 villages in the area.

"NATO is superior to Russia in the number of soldiers, aviation and navy, but inferior in artillery and nuclear charges: BILD infographic
Today, a NATO summit dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the alliance opens in Washington. Ahead of the meeting, BILD compiled a detailed infographic comparing the armed forces of 32 NATO countries with Russia and China.
▫️ A total of 3,438,097 people serve in the armies of NATO countries. Almost half of them are in the US Army (highlighted in red on the graph). This is more than Russia and China combined.
▫️ NATO countries together have 1,894 MLRS and 11,710 self-propelled artillery units. Russia alone is ahead of them all in both indicators.
▫️ NATO has 3,387 combat aircraft and 9,030 helicopters. This is more than Russia and China combined.
▫️ In terms of the number of destroyers (95), submarines (144), frigates (134) and aircraft carriers (17), NATO is ahead of Russia and China combined.
▫️ The USA, France and Great Britain have fewer nuclear warheads in total (5559) than Russia alone (5580)."

🇰🇷🗣 🇺🇸 ❗️ 🇰🇵 — 🇬🇧 Reuters | Exclusive-South Korea's Yoon to discuss Pyongyang's 'distinct threat' to Europe at NATO | July 8, 2024:
"SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said he would discuss with NATO leaders the distinct threat North Korea poses to Europe by deepening military ties with Russia, warning that Moscow must choose between the two Koreas where its true interests lie.
It "depends entirely" on Russia where it wants to take future ties with South Korea, Yoon said, adding that Seoul would make a decision on weapons support for Ukraine based on how a new military pact between Moscow and Pyongyang plays out.
"Military co-operation between Russia and North Korea poses a distinct threat and grave challenge to the peace and security on the Korean peninsula and in Europe," Yoon told Reuters."

EU’s law enforcement agency Europol is another major entity that is setting its sights on breaking encryption.
This time, it’s about home routing and mobile encryption, and the justification is a well-known one: encryption supposedly stands in the way of the ability of law enforcement to investigate.
The overall rationale is that police and other agencies face serious challenges in doing their job (an argument repeatedly proven as false) and that destroying the internet’s currently best available security feature for all users – encryption – is the way to solve the problem.
Europol’s recent paper treats home routing not as a useful security feature, but, as “a serious challenge for lawful interception.” Home routing works by encrypting data from a phone through the home network while roaming.

🇨🇱Chile will consider 81 lithium projects proposals from private sector
Chilean officials on Tuesday said they will consider 81 proposals for lithium projects across the South American country, putting the country on track to surpass a goal of launching four new projects by the end of 2026.
Chile in April called for proposals in more than two dozen salt flats that contain the battery metal, in line with the government's aims to boost production. It is currently the world's No. 2 producer.
The interested firms are mostly based in Chile, as well as Canada, Australia, Switzerland, the United States, China, Singapore, England, Germany and India. They submitted proposals for 16 salt flats as well as other types of deposits containing lithium.
