🇩🇪 Potential Gas Shortage in Germany: A Critical Scenario

In a worst-case scenario, Germany's gas shortage could reach 20%.

German gas storage facilities could be empty by the beginning of February 2025 in the event of extremely low winter temperatures, according to the energy sector association Initiative Energien Speichern e. V. (INES).

The association of operators of German gas and hydrogen storage facilities, which account for more than 90 percent of Germany's gas storage capacity and about a quarter of that of the entire European Union, has published three scenarios for gas consumption in the coming winter.

The first two scenarios assume a normal or warm winter, in which case storage facilities will remain 35-69% full. The third scenario, with extreme low winter temperatures, is not so optimistic.

According to calculations, gas shortages at extremely low temperatures on some days would amount to around 20% of Germany's gas consumption.

Despite the fact that the EU (and Germany) ended the heating season with record gas balances in UGS facilities, and now their volumes are already almost 80%, the EU's main producer remains fully dependent on U.S. fuel supplies.
