NATO cybersecurity center finishes tests of quantum-proof network
"The strategy outlines how quantum can be applied to defence and security in areas such as sensing, imaging, precise positioning, navigation and timing, improve the detection of submarines, and upgrade and secure data communications using quantum resistant cryptography.
Many of these technologies are already used in the private sector and have become the subject of strategic competition. NATO’s quantum strategy helps foster and guide NATO’s cooperation with industry to develop a transatlantic quantum technologies ecosystem, while preparing NATO to defend itself against the malicious use of quantum technologies.
Quantum is one of the technological areas that NATO Allies have prioritized due to their implications for defence and security. These include artificial intelligence, data and computing, autonomy, biotechnology and human enhancements, hypersonic technologies, energy and propulsion, novel materials, next-generation communications networks and space."

"TAIPEI -- Huawei Technologies is suing Taiwanese mobile chip developer MediaTek over alleged infringement of its intellectual property patents, the latest example of the Chinese company's efforts to increase its collection of licensing fees and royalties.
Huawei, which holds patents for many key mobile technologies, filed the suit in a Chinese district court. MediaTek, the world's top developer of chips used in smartphones and other mobile devices, confirmed the case in a filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange on Friday and said it would have no significant impact on the chipmaker, but declined to comment further on the matter.
No details on the lawsuit, including what damages Huawei may be seeking, have been made public.
(...)
Another person with knowledge of the matter said Huawei has filed patent lawsuits against numerous companies, mainly to increase its sources of revenue after its smartphone business, once the second-largest in the world, was hit by U.S. export controls.
(...)
Huawei has been stepping up its efforts to collect royalties since 2021, shortly after Washington began tightening its clampdown on the company. Its licensing and cross-licensing partners include European automakers such as Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, BMW and Porsche. It inked cross-licensing deals for 5G technologies with Oppo and Samsung last year."

"The re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as European Commission president has already triggered the first international spat: China has denounced the political guidelines of her second mandate for containing "gross interference" in the country's internal affairs.
"Playing with fire on Taiwan is highly dangerous," Wang Lutong, the director general for European affairs at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Friday, one day after the Commission chief clinched a majority in Strasbourg.
"Meddling and even trying to join forces is by no means a right choice for Europe."

🔶️ The war in Ukraine has created a distinct class of weaponry, vastly different from the rest produced and utilized worldwide. A small group of countries has acquired highly guarded knowledge: Russia, Ukraine, the USA, Germany, and France. Other NATO countries have amassed tactical and operational knowledge, but this initial group has field experience on refining defense and offensive weaponry. Ukrainians possess unique tactical knowledge on maritime usage unmatched by any other nation. Russians share part of this knowledge, mainly focusing on defensive measures.
🔶️ Not long ago, I wrote about how Russians have evolved in the field, transitioning from traditional BTG formations to smaller tactical units and subsequently operations on a squadron level. However, Russian advancements have been most notable in electronic warfare, air defense systems, and ballistic and cruise missiles.
🔶️ It is precisely these advancements that attract Chinese interest. A significant portion of Chinese air defense comprises HQ9B systems, an enhanced version of the Soviet S-300.
🔶️ While the Chinese have refined this system and developed others using domestic technology, the war in Ukraine highlighted the inefficacy of unproven systems until battle-tested and improved in actual combat situations. Both Western and Russian systems have undergone numerous upgrades based on battlefield experience.
🔶️ Guided weaponry is no exception. For example, HIMARS rocket systems have undergone three upgrades to thwart Russian jamming systems that began obstructing all Western satellite-guided ammunition—a technology the Chinese would undoubtedly seek at any cost.
🔶️ There are also evasion techniques that Russian missions have successfully employed against Western systems, learned over time in warfare. Additionally, when it comes to employing less impactful armaments, knowledge on ammunition and armor also could interest the Chinese, albeit to a lesser extent. What would the Chinese be willing to negotiate with the Russians?
🔶️ The automation of Russian military factories would likely be a topic in such negotiations. Russia has recently begun automating the production of 152mm ammunition and long-range drones but this process is limited to a small portion of their scale. A full automation akin to what is seen in China today would exponentially boost the Russian military-industrial complex.
🔶️ As warfare reshapes global military power dynamics, it will be a challenge that NATO must address post-conflict. The transfer of knowledge gained in Ukraine is a valuable asset in this realm.

🚢 🇬🇧 🇮🇱 Artificial intelligence from Amazon deployed in maritime
🔶️ London-listed Windward, an Israeli maritime AI company, has joined the Amazon Web Services (AWS) ISV Accelerate Program and has collaborated with AWS to launch a generative AI solutions that leverages Amazon Bedrock to improve risk management for the shipping, logistics, and public sectors.
🔶️ Windward’s collaboration with AWS aims to address the growing challenges faced by the maritime and logistics industries, particularly in managing unstructured data, maintaining consistent workflows, and mitigating expertise shortages.
🔶️ To build the new solution, Windward used Amazon Bedrock, a fully managed service that offers a choice of high-performing foundation models from leading AI companies via a single API, along with a broad set of capabilities organisations need to build generative AI applications with security, privacy, and responsible AI. Windward equips those models with proprietary maritime logistics data to deliver more relevant and accurate responses to queries related to vessels and shipments.
🔶️ Maritime AI Expert, the virtual agent powered by Amazon Bedrock, has been trained on over 12 years of Windward’s data and maritime expertise.
🔶️ Windward’s customers will soon be able to use their own unstructured data, a previously untapped asset in the shipping and logistics industries, enabling them to use their unique data to reduce risk. In addition, AWS’ Prototyping team will offer hands-on support to Windward teams on a variety of technologies to solve challenges that are now possible to address due to the leap in generative AI capabilities.
🔶️ “We are excited to work with AWS and combine our advanced maritime expertise with generative AI capabilities from AWS,” said Ami Daniel, the CEO of Windward. “The convergence between vertical AI, generative AI, and our collaboration with AWS through the ISV Accelerate Program allows us to now solve bigger problems than we ever could. The shipping and logistics industries are traditionally under-digitised, as such, the potential upside for our key customers in partnering with us and combining their data with our technology will create a significant reduction of risk and uplift to their revenues.”
