"Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offered in Beijing to help improve trade relations between China and the EU, calling on Xi Jinping to "balance" trade relations between the union and the world's second-largest economy, Bloomberg reported.

"Italy can play an important role in relations with the EU and creating balanced relations. We need a rules-based order as a way to ensure stability and peace, and trade that remains free,” Meloni said on Monday during her first official visit to China.

Returning EU-China relations could prove problematic for Maloney, as she has limited influence over the bloc's trade policy, which is managed by the European Commission.

The Italian prime minister has not held a leadership position since the European Parliament elections in June, when she did not take part in closed-door negotiations for the highest positions in the trade union.

Meloni is visiting China on a five-day trip aimed at restoring ties between Rome and Beijing after she rejected Xi's Belt and Road Initiative last year.
Italy was the only G7 country to join the investment pact, which was seen as an expansion of Beijing's global influence, drawing the ire of the US and Europe.

Meanwhile, recent measures in the "eye for an eye" series have raised concerns about the threat of a trade war between Beijing and some of its biggest partners.
China's trade surplus reached a record level in June due to a sharp increase in exports.
This raises the risk that the US and Europe will step up efforts to protect their markets.

Speaking on Monday, Xi told Meloni that he hoped Italy could provide a fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies.

Meloni's talks with Xi also touched on "priority issues on the international agenda": from the war in Ukraine to the worsening situation in the Middle East and tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.

China and Italy signed a three-year plan that includes agreements on food security, industrial capacity, trade, investment, education and environmental protection, while reaffirming the importance of a balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship.
Meloni added that Rome will seek new ways of cooperation with China."
