🇺🇸🇨🇳🏭 Geopolitical Risk and Decoupling: Evidence from U.S. Export Controls
🔗 New York Federal Reserve
📎📝 Arnaud Betrand:
🔸 Wow, this is huge: the Federal Reserve is essentially saying that the U.S. shot itself in the foot with its export controls on China (which was illustrated by Intel's recent staff layoffs).
🔸 They also highlight that "the benefits of U.S. export controls, namely denying China access to advanced technology, may be limited as a result of Chinese strategic behavior. Indeed, there is evidence that, following U.S. export controls, China has boosted domestic innovation and self-reliance, and increased purchases from non-U.S. firms that produce similar technology to the U.S.-made ones subject to export controls.”
🔸 In other words, it's almost a pure loss for US firms who lose customers, revenue and market capitalization whereas the affected Chinese firms find alternative suppliers and China boosts its domestic innovation and self-reliance.
"The U.S. has imposed export controls to deny China access to strategic technologies [but] we find no evidence of reshoring or friend-shoring. As a result of these disruptions, affected suppliers have negative abnormal stock returns, wiping out $130 billion in market capitalization, and experience a drop in bank lending, profitability, and employment. [U.S. firms'] total number of customers declines, potentially inflicting collateral damage upon the same U.S. firms whose technology export controls are trying to protect."

“We are not afraid”, this is how María Corina Machado's demonstration in Las Mercedes closed.
“We express strong concern about the situation in Venezuela following last Sunday's presidential elections.
We call on the Venezuelan authorities to promptly publish all voting records to ensure full transparency and integrity of the electoral process. The opposition indicates that it has collected and published more than 80% of the voting registers produced at each polling station. This verification is essential to recognize the will of the Venezuelan people.
The rights of all Venezuelans, especially political leaders, must be respected during this process. We strongly condemn any arrest or threat against them.
The will of the Venezuelan people, as well as their right to protest and assemble peacefully must be respected.
We will continue to follow the situation closely together with our partners and support the Venezuelan people's call for democracy and peace.”

📹 Several dozen rockets were fired from Lebanon towards Israel.
This is probably one of the retaliations to the assassination that took place today, and the drone strike that killed a teen and injured other civilians.

🇬🇧 🇦🇫 Lord Miles on X:
🔶️ "3 children were brutally murdered by a migrant and the police did nothing, so half the country has erupted into mass riots.
🔶️ People are incredibly upset at the British gov response which blamed the protestors anger for being misdirected, treating the British as second class citizens which further fueled the riots
🔶️ From my understanding, migrants are wildly unpopular, nobody wants them, nobody voted for them yet they're here, what's the point of democracy if your vote doesn't get you what the politician promised?"

I've often heard people say: anonymity defends against violent coercion from the state.
But that's propaganda. The truth is far bigger than we imagined.
There are two forms of power: soft power and hard power.
Soft power means winning people over. You think my reasoning is rational or you align with my values. That's soft power.
Hard power is coercive and there are two forms: military and economic force. States offer military protection as a carrot; trade sanctions as a stick.
Hard power uses its coercive might to make you follow its will.
My argument is this: cryptography is a new third form of hard power.
Cryptography makes use of hard mathematical laws of nature that cannot be changed. It does not bow down before man's law.
Hackers can wield cryptography to inflict their vision on the world.
The dark forest refers to the internet overgrown with cryptography, the end result of the "going dark" problem described by the FBI in 2013.
What does this mean?
Imagine an authoritarian regime comes to power and oppresses your people.
You and your friends want to fight back. You form a squad to mobilize against injustice and for freedom.
You form anon on-chain treasuries and aggregate funding for your operations.
You conduct trade fully in the dark and recruit people to your cause.
You organize and communicate in a fully deniable and safe way.
You host no infrastructure and everything you use is fully p2p and untraceable.
You are anonymous, uncensored and sovereign.
Those who have nothing to hide, have nothing to say- they are non-threatening.
Cryptography is expansive, not merely defensive. We want cryptography precisely because we want to live in a free society.
The regimes of power that dominate the world today are extremely corrupt. They have everything to lose with the success of crypto.
You have nothing to lose except your chains.
Our job as cyber-revolutionaries is to rewild the internet and expand the dark forest.
This is the hard, expansive power of cryptography.
So, let there be dark.
