🇻🇪🇻🇪🚓 — The Public Prosecutor's Office of Venezuela, controlled by the Chavismo, announced that it has opened a criminal investigation against Edmundo González and María Corina Machado for the crimes of Usurpation of Functions, Dissemination of False Information, Incitement to Disobedience of the Laws, Incitement to Insurrection, Association to Commit Crimes, and Conspiracy; see the full statement:

"The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela informs the country that as a consequence of the dissemination of a Communiqué by former candidate Edmundo González and citizen María Corina Machado, in which, outside the framework of the Constitution and the Law, they falsely announce a winner of the presidential elections different from the one proclaimed by the National Electoral Council, the only qualified body to do so, and in which there is an open incitement to police and military officials to disobey the laws; it has decided to open a criminal investigation against both signatories of the null document.

In the aforementioned statement, the alleged commission of the crimes of Usurpation of Functions, Dissemination of False Information to Cause Unrest, Incitement to Disobedience of the Laws, Incitement to Insurrection, Association to Commit Crimes, and Conspiracy is evident.

The Public Prosecutor's Office, as the holder of the criminal action and in its duty to be the guarantor of peace and stability in the country, will remain vigilant against any act that implies the generation of violence or unrest in the population and that seeks to revive events that have left painful wounds in the entire Venezuelan family."

NVIDIA $NVDA: -11%
😀📉❗️🧠🧠🏴 ZeroHedge | Nvidia Reportedly Delays Next AI Chip As Shares Tank On Global Selloff | August 5, 2024:

"Nvidia shares plunged in early premarket trading in New York. The world's most valuable chip maker is being battered by a global selloff, rising recession fears, AI bubble unwind (mid-July report: "Did The AI Bubble Just Burst, And What Happens Next") , and reports of delays in its new AI chip production.

The Information reports that Nvidia has informed Microsoft and other cloud providers that its most advanced AI chip models in the Blackwell series (B200 AI chip) face three months of delays following the discovery of a design flaw "unusually late in the production process."

Google, Meta, and Microsoft are betting billions of dollars on Nvidia's new chips to maintain top leadership in the AI arms race. All three companies have ordered "tens of billions of dollars" of advanced AI chips that might not be produced until later this year and might not be ready for mass shipment until the first quarter of 2025."

🧠🧠🧠❞ — 🏴ZeroHedge | "Chip Wars" Will Soon Be "Data Center Wars", As Our "Next AI Trade" Develops | August 5, 2024:

"As we have alluded to numerous times when talking about the next "AI" trade, data centers will be the "factories of the future" when it comes to the age of AI.

That's the contention of Chris Miller, the author of Chip War, who penned a recent opinion column for Financial Times noting that 'chip wars' could very soon become 'cloud wars'.

He points out that the strategic use of high-powered computing dates back to the Cold War when the US allowed the USSR limited access to supercomputers for weather forecasting, not nuclear simulations."

🇬🇧 Race riots put Britain on collision course with Elon Musk

Britain’s government has social platforms in its sights as incitement spreads — and the X owner is squaring up for a fight.

The billionaire X owner sparked fury in the British government this weekend after he responded to incendiary footage of the far-right disorder that's sweeping the country by saying "civil war is inevitable."

The post on X was roundly condemned by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office, which said there was “no justification” for Musk’s comments.

But Musk doubled, then tripled down on Monday night. Responding to a statement from Starmer vowing his government would “not tolerate attacks on mosques or on Muslim communities,” the X boss effectively accused the British prime minister of wearing blinkers. “Shouldn’t you be concerned about attacks on all communities?” Policing of the unrest "does seem one-sided," he offered in a third post.

Starmer's top interior minister, Yvette Cooper, meanwhile has a litany of complaints over the way social media giants like X are policing incitement and disinformation on their platforms.

“There are some things which are clearly already criminal, where we'll need police intervention and action to pursue those," Cooper told the BBC Monday. "There are other areas where the social media companies do have clear requirements at the moment to remove criminal material, and should be doing so, but sometimes take too long to do so.

"There are other areas where they have made commitments around their terms and conditions that are supposed to be enforced but are not being done so."

Cooper's vowed to take up the issue with tech giants this week.

Yet, despite plenty of hand-wringing over the proliferation of far-right messaging, Britain's toolbox for forcing the hands of social media companies seems limited.

🇺🇸 🇦🇺 🇨🇳 US military eyes Australia's Indian Ocean toehold to deter China

🔶️ A remote Australian island close to an Indian Ocean chokepoint for Chinese oil shipments is on a list of possible locations for US military construction aimed at deterring China, with the US saying it "may or may not" support American forces.

🔶️ Australia's Cocos Islands is listed along with the Philippines, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea for anticipated construction projects under the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, designed to enhance US force posture and infrastructure to counter China.

🔶️ Cocos Islands is closer to the Strait of Malacca, a chokepoint for half of China's oil shipments, than the US Navy base of Diego Garcia, a launch pad for US bombers in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, but whose long-term future is under a cloud.

🔒 🇬🇧 👮‍♂️ The Director of Public Prosecutions says his teams will consider seeking the extradition from abroad of social media influencers who are playing a role in the violent disorder gripping the UK.

🔶️ Stephen Parkinson told the BBC that offenders "must know that they are not safe and there is nowhere to hide".

🔶️ He added that anybody involved in the violence should know they would face the most severe possible criminal charges, including terrorism.

🔶️ Mr Parkinson said: “Some people are abroad. That doesn't mean they're safe. We have liaison prosecutors around the globe, who've got local links with the local judiciary. We can cooperate with our international partners.

🔶️ “We would certainly consider extradition if we are satisfied that an offence has been committed.

A U.S. Navy briefing slide is calling new attention to the worrisome disparity between Chinese and U.S. capacity to build new naval vessels and total naval force sizes.

This graphic, via Visual Capitalist's Bruno Venditti, shows the top 12 countries by their number of military submarines as of July 2024, based on data from GlobalFirepower.com.

🇧🇷🤡👤🚀 — The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), once again criticized the work of Elon Musk, stating that "billionaires prefer to colonize Mars rather than take care of Earth"

🇨🇱 Lula made these remarks in Santiago, Chile, where he participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Chilean space center. At the ceremony, the Brazilian and Chilean governments signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in space activities for peaceful purposes, aiming to exchange information in research within this field.

"For the benefits of space development to be shared by all, it is essential that they are fostered within a solid framework of public policies. The fantasies of billionaires who prefer to colonize Mars rather than take care of Earth do not replace the action and guidance of the State.

When it comes to technology, the common practice in the developing world is to race to the top and, as the South Korean economist says, kick the ladder away so that others cannot reach it. Cooperation between countries of the Global South has the potential to reverse this disadvantage. Together we can multiply our ability to build our own ladder."

🌹 In his speech, Chilean President Gabriel Boric (Convergencia Social, left) endorsed Lula's statement, saying that space is not for millionaires who can afford to see the Earth from above. "Space must be a place for everyone, so that all who inhabit the Earth can benefit," he said.
