🇵🇦🤝🇺🇸 Migration to US Through Panama’s Jungle Cut by 80% on Tighter Curbs

➡️ US and Panama’s new government increase controls for migrants

➡️ Immigration is a top issue in the US presidential election

The number of migrants trekking toward the US through the dangerous Darien jungle route fell to a two-year low after President Joe Biden and Panama’s new government imposed tighter controls.

Some 16,603 migrants crossed into Central America from Colombia in August, according to Panama’s migration institute, down 80% from the same month in 2023.

Most of the people taking this route plan to cross Central America and Mexico to get to the US southern border. Immigration is among the top concerns for voters in this year’s election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

In June, Biden issued an executive order limiting asylum claims. Then, in July, Panama’s new President Jose Raul Mulino took office and closed six of the seven border crossings from Colombia and increased patrols.

Border closures by Venezuela after its disputed presidential election may also have reduced the flow. Of the migrants through the Darien last month, 71% were Venezuelans, followed by Colombians, Vietnamese, Ecuadoreans, Indians and Haitians.

🇪🇺⚡️🇻🇪 Venezuela: MEPs recognise Edmundo González as President

➡️ Rejection of electoral fraud orchestrated by the Venezuelan regime

➡️ MEPs condemn the persecution of the democratic opposition

➡️ Warn about a new migratory exodus from Venezuela

The EU should do its utmost to ensure that Edmundo González Urrutia, the legitimate and democratically elected President of Venezuela, can take office on 10 January 2025.

In a resolution adopted on Thursday 19 September by 309 votes in favour, 201 against and 12 abstentions, Parliament “strongly condemns and fully rejects the electoral fraud orchestrated by the regime-controlled National Electoral Council, which refused to make public the official result.” MEPs recognise Edmundo González Urrutia as the country’s legitimate and democratically elected president, and María Corina Machado as the leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela. They also strongly condemn the Venezuelan Government’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Mr González.

🇨🇷✔️🇻🇪— The Costa Rican Congress approved a motion recognizing Edmundo González Urrutia as the elected president of Venezuela. The vote saw near-unanimous support (43 in favor and 1 against), with the only dissenting vote coming from Deputy Rocío Alfaro of the Frente Amplio party.

The Costa Rican legislators also expressed their "condemnation of Nicolás Maduro's regime in Venezuela, for staying in power and refusing to respect the will of the Venezuelan people, thereby violating human rights and the fundamental political rights of its citizens."

"The people of Costa Rica have witnessed and felt the tragedy of the Venezuelan people, who have literally abandoned their country and fled the dictatorship and the poverty it generates. It is clear to Costa Rica that Nicolás Maduro did not receive the majority of Venezuelan votes, and we therefore reject the fraudulent claim that he won the election. It is undeniable that Edmundo González received the majority support of the Venezuelan people!"

There is an interestingly psychological phenomena whereas some Threat Actors, particularly scammers and fraudsters, falsely believe having money will make them respectable or make people like them.

Money means nothing. Materialism does not impress people — only the shallow.
🇩🇪🔋 Germany opens the first lithium refinery plant in Europe

Located in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Saxony-Anhalt, the German government has pledged a billion euros to support domestic and international raw materials projects.

The refinery is expected to produce 20,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually – sufficient to supply around half a million electric vehicle batteries.

This facility represents the first of five planned modules at the site, with the potential to expand the yearly capacity to 100,000 metric tons.

However, the opening comes at a time when demand for EVs in Europe is shrinking.

Volkswagen is having serious trouble keeping its factories open and its employees employed. The EV factory in Vorst, Brussels, Belgium, is said to be sold to a foreign invester by the Volkswagen group with Chinese EV maker, Nio, mulling a takeover of the plant.

Volkswagen is not the only German car manufacturer facing issues with a drop in sales and demand. Mercedes-Benz has lost subsidies offered by Italy after construction work stopped at the EV plant in Termoli. Mercedes-Benz also halted work at another EV plant in Kaiserslautern, Rhineland-Palatinate.

Rome was fed up with the constant delays and evasive responses from the group and decided to use the subsidies in other green ventures.

Last week, Stellantis was halting production of the electric Fiat-500 model in Turin due to a lack of orders in Europe.

🌧 An unusual shift in the weather has turned the Sahara green

Satellites recently captured plant life blooming in parts of the typically arid southern Sahara after storms moved there when they shouldn’t. It has also caused catastrophic flooding. And scientists say a world warming due to fossil fuel pollution is making both more likely.

Satellite imagery from NASA's MODIS satellite depicts vegetation extent (green coloring) over Africa on September 12, 2024, versus the same day in 2023. Vegetation reaches much farther north in 2024 in places like Niger and Chad and is more lush (darker green) just above the equator in a place like the Central African Republic. NASA

Rainfall north of the equator in Africa typically increases from July through September as the West African Monsoon kicks into gear.

The phenomenon is marked by an increase in stormy weather that erupts when moist, tropical air from near the equator meets hot, dry air from the northern portion of the continent. The focus for this stormy weather – known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone – shifts north of the equator in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months. Much of it sags south of the equator during the Southern Hemisphere’s warm months.

But since at least mid-July, this zone has shifted farther north than it typically should, sending storms into the southern Sahara, including portions of Niger, Chad, Sudan and even as far north as Libya, according to data from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

As a result, these portions of the Sahara Desert are anywhere from twice as wet to more than six times wetter than they should be.

The transition from El Niño to La Niña has influenced how far north this zone has moved this summer Haustein said. El Niño – a natural climate pattern marked by warmer than average ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific – typically leads to drier than normal conditions in the wet portions of West and Central Africa. La Niña, or even a budding one, can have the opposite effect.

A warming world is the other significant factor.

“The Intertropical Convergence Zone, which is the reason for (Africa’s) greening, moves farther north the warmer the world gets,” Haustein explained. “At least, this is what most models suggest.”

🇩🇪Lufthansa Withdraws from Competition with Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways

Lufthansa is set to discontinue its Frankfurt am Main to Beijing route, citing the impact of EU anti-Russian sanctions.

The key issue is that Russia has closed its airspace to EU carriers, forcing them to extend their flight paths. As a result, the flight duration from Germany to Beijing has increased by two hours. Lufthansa explained to Spiegel that the route is operated by fuel-hungry Airbus A340-300s, which consume significant amounts of kerosene.

Meanwhile, competitors from Turkey and the Gulf states continue flying through Russian airspace without restrictions. These airlines are gaining a competitive edge over Lufthansa by offering faster and more cost-efficient flights.
