"CHISINAU, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Support for Ukraine guarantees the survival of neighbouring Moldova, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Tuesday at a conference to address concerns about broadening Russian interference in the region.

"Everything that we do to support Ukraine also means fostering stabilisation with regards to Moldova," Baerbock said. "It is clear what the greatest concern of the people here is: that if Ukraine falls, Moldova is the next country in line."

Baerbock was visiting Chisinau for the Moldova Partnership Platform, together with her counterparts from France, Romania, Poland, the Netherlands and Lithuania."

"A growing number oil tankers that were sanctioned for their role in transporting Russian petroleum are finding work again — a blow to western authorities who sought to clamp down on the vessels in an effort to hurt Moscow’s access to petrodollars.

Since late April, at least 17 cargoes of crude and refined products have left Russian ports on ships sanctioned by the US, UK or European Union in response to Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Most have been carried on vessels that were owned by Russian tanker giant Sovcomflot PJSC at the time they were designated.

In the immediate aftermath of sanctions, the vast majority of the tankers targeted were left idling, some for as many as eight months.

🇦🇱 Albania wants to renounce sovereignty over part of its capital, Tirana, in favor of creating the Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order akin to the Vatican in Italy

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said Sunday his country would transform the Tirana-based Bektashi Muslims, an Islamic Sufi order, into a sovereign state to promote moderation, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Speaking at the United Nations, Rama pointed out that Albania, a tiny Western Balkan country, saved Jewish refugees from the Nazis during World War II and sheltered Afghans after the Taliban came to power three years ago.

Albanians are also proud of giving to the world Mother Teresa who “embodied love for humanity,” he said.

“She told us that not all of us can do big things, but we can all do small things with big love,” he said. “That is our inspiration in supporting the transformation of the World Bektashi Order into a sovereign state in our capital, Tirana, as a new center of moderation, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.”

Albania's 2.4-million population is about 50% Muslim with the rest of the population Catholic and Orthodox Christians and other smaller communities. The country is known for its religious harmony and co-existence.

Bektashi muslims make up 10% of the Albanian Muslim population or 5% of the total population of Albania. Latest surveys regarding religiosity in Albania showed that Islam declined to under 50% of the population for the first time in 5 centuries with irreligiosity, Catholicism and Orthodoxy being the only religious communities on the rise in the country.

Bektashism an Islamic Sufi mystic order originating in the 13th-century Ottoman Empire. It is named after the Haji Bektash Veli.

Originally one of many Sufi orders within Sunni Islam, by the 16th century the order adopted some tenets of Twelver Shia Islam, including a veneration of ʿAlī, the son-in-law of Muhammad, and the Twelve Imams; as well as a variety of syncretic beliefs. The Bektashis acquired political importance in the 15th century, when the order dominated the Janissary Corps.

After the foundation of the Turkish Republic, Kemal Atatürk banned religious institutions that were not part of the Directorate of Religious Affairs and the community's headquarters relocated to Albania.

According to a 2005 estimate made by Reshat Bardhi, there are over seven million Bektashis worldwide, though more recent studies put the figure as high as 20 million. An additional 12.5 million Bektashis live in Turkey. Bektashis are mainly found throughout Anatolia, the Balkans and among Ottoman-era Greek Muslim communities.
