💰💪🥇 Fed Chair Powell calls Bitcoin a competitor to gold, not the US dollar

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, speaking at the New York Times DealBook Summit on Wednesday, addressed Bitcoin as a competitor to gold rather than the US dollar.

“People use Bitcoin as a speculative asset. It’s like gold, it’s just like gold—only it’s virtual, it’s digital,” Powell said. “People are not using it as a form of payment or a store of value. It’s highly volatile. It’s not a competitor for the dollar; it’s really a competitor for gold.”

🇷🇺🇷🇺🇸🇾 Russia may redeploy Africa Corps units to Syria to reinforce the Assad regime in Syria.

A scenario in which Syrian rebels toppled the Assad regime would harm the Kremlin’s strategic objectives in Africa and surrounding waterways such as the Mediterranean and Red Seas.

Ukraine’s Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) claimed on December 3 that the Kremlin had decided to redeploy “private military contractors, probably Africa Corps” units to Syria in response to the surprise Syrian rebel offensive in late November.

Russia previously redeployed Africa Corps units away from Africa during Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast in August 2024, establishing a precedent for using Africa Corps personnel to plug manpower gaps in higher-priority theaters.

Africa Corps may shore up Syrian regime forces in support and advisory roles but likely lacks the capacity to send adequate numbers of troops to change the situation fundamentally.

It is unclear how far the Syrian rebels can advance and whether they can hold their gains.

An Assad defeat would harm the Kremlin’s strategic objectives to project power in the Mediterranean & Red Seas and threaten NATO’s southern flank from Africa & the Mediterranean.

Assad’s collapse would additionally damage the global perception of Russia as an effective partner and protector, potentially threatening Russia’s partnerships with African autocrats and its resulting economic, military, and political influence in Africa.

🇧🇷❤️📱 Brazilian lawmaker proposes $18 billion Bitcoin reserve initiative

Brazilian lawmaker Eros Biondini introduced legislation proposing the creation of a Bitcoin (BTC) Sovereign Strategic Reserve (RESBit) with an allocation of up to $18.6 billion — equivalent to 5% of Brazil’s international reserves as of September.

According to the bill, the RESBit will diversify Brazil’s Treasury assets, protect international reserves against exchange fluctuations and geopolitical risks, and act as backing for the country’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), the Drex.

The bill aims to “modernize the technological and finance management in Brazil” in an effort to become more competitive in the global digital economy.

According to the document:

“Although volatile, data indicates that crypto is consolidating as a legitimate asset class. Countries that adopt strategies to integrate them economically will sow significant benefits in the medium and long terms.”

In addition to diversifying the country’s international reserves, the bill also mentions fostering research and development related to blockchain.

The educational push includes training public agents to act on the RESBit initiative, creating graduation programs tied to blockchain, crypto, and cybersecurity at public education institutions, and incentivizing startups to create crypto-related projects.

Biondini said:

“The formation of RESBit is a strategic measure that positions Brazil at the leadership of the new digital economy, reducing economic risks and amplifying the technological and financial development opportunities.”

🇨🇩 🦠🦠 Unknown flu-like disease kills at least 79 people in DR Congo

At least 79 people have died from an unknown disease that is causing flu-like symptoms in south-western Democratic Republic of Congo, the health ministry says.

The health ministry says the majority of people who have died are between the ages of 15 and 18.

More than 300 people have been infected with patients exhibiting symptoms like fever, headaches, runny noses and coughs, breathing difficulties and anaemia.

Response teams have been sent to Kwango Province, specifically the Panzi health zone, where the disease is most common, to manage cases and investigate the nature of the disease.

Symphorien Manzanza, a civil society leader, told Reuters news agency the situation was worrying as the number of infected people continues to rise.
