Tesla’s profitability is questionable due to the amount of subsidies it receives as part of the US’ green agenda. Add to it that a significant portion of Tesla’s industrial output is in China, meaning under constant threat of suddenly finding itself seized by Beijing, is a bad situation for Musk.

Add to it competition from China’s own EV makers, who can build more cars, faster and cheaper, with Chinese labourers and resources, Musk’s situation becomes even bleaker as Tesla is Musk’s main cashcow.

Reshoring factories from China to the US or other, friendlier countries like Germany, would add a layer of security for Musk’s wealth. But this process is long and very costly.

So Musk is trying manipulate the Trump administration into giving him the millions of Indians he wants to staff his future American factories with in an attempt to safeguard his wealth and potentially increase it.

It was never about top-talent and skills. It always was about money and profit.

“I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them,” Trump said by phone, referring to the H-1b program which permits companies to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations.  

“I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program,” added Trump, who restricted access to foreign worker visas in his first administration and has been critical of the program in the past.
