"Switzerland and Serbia have both offered to host a potential meeting between President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, following recent discussions about the possibility of such talks.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry said on Jan. 12 that it is willing to host talks between Trump and Putin, while Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on the same day that his country would be an “extremely suitable” venue for such a meeting given that both men are highly popular in the Balkan country.
Switzerland, which is not a member of NATO or the European Union, is widely recognized as a neutral country and has maintained a policy of neutrality for centuries. The country has often served as a venue for diplomatic meetings and peace talks because of its reputation for neutrality.
Serbia, which is also not a NATO member, is in the process of joining the EU, with talks at an advanced stage. The country has historically maintained close ties with Russia and has not imposed sanctions on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict."

Switzerland, which is not a member of NATO or the European Union, is widely recognized as a neutral country and has maintained a policy of neutrality for centuries
"Switzerland's historic neutrality is no longer: moments ago Reuters reported that the Swiss government had joined the EU in adopting sanctions on Russia, freezing assets of targeted companies and people effective immediately:
SWISS GOVERNMENT SAYS ADOPTS EU SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA
SWISS GOVERNMENT SAYS FREEZES ASSETS OF TARGETED PEOPLE AND COMPANIES EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
SWISS GOVERNMENT SAYS ADOPTS FINANCIAL SANCTIONS AGAINST PRESIDENT PUTIN AND OTHER RUSSIAN OFFICIALS
Swiss President Ignazio Cassis said that adopting the EU sanctions against Russia was a unique, difficult step that required careful consideration. Previously, on Sunday, he said that Switzerland’s neutrality must be preserved and it stood ready to offer its good offices for diplomacy if talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials on the Belarusian border do not succeed, for example by reaching an armistice."

🇺🇸🇵🇦🇨🇳 Chinese ports near Panama control, threaten canal, Rubio says
Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio said Chinese port facilities at either end of the Panama Canal pose a military threat and could be used by Beijing in a crisis to shut down military shipping.
Mr. Rubio, appearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about the need to restore U.S. control over the canal are serious, asserting that the Chinese presence means the canal is no longer in the Panamanian government’s control.
Mr. Trump has voiced concerns about the need to reacquire the waterway and earlier this month would not rule out using military or economic action to take it over.

🇮🇱 🇵🇸 🕊 ❗️ — Axios reports that Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal has been officially signed in Doha, making the deal now de jure official!
➡️ Israel’s security cabinet is set to meet Friday morning to vote on the deal, followed by a full government plenary vote on Saturday night. The ceasefire and hostage release are anticipated to take place on Monday.
➡️ A U.S. official said that on Wednesday night, after the deal was announced, there was a disagreement about the final list of Palestinian prisoners who are supposed to be released as part of the deal.
➡️ Hamas demanded to swap several names on the list for military leaders of the militant group who are serving multiple life sentences for planning and orchestrating suicide bombings, Israeli and U.S. officials said.
➡️ Israel had earlier used the veto it has as part of the deal to block their release but Hamas brought them up again as a new demand in the negotiations.
