"A pair of Republican lawmakers have issued public statements of support for the United States exiting the the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. The rare call comes on the heels of the explosive row between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Donald Trump at the White House last Friday.
First, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) posted to X Saturday, "Get us out of NATO." He highlighted a chart showing that the US represents around 70% of the entire annual combined defense spending of NATO countries. No other nation comes close. Lee's post also featured the conclusion of Rod Martin, who wrote: "Just to be clear, the Europeans aren’t gonna do jack."
The Europeans are at this moment trying to cobble together a "coalition of the willing" - in the Sunday words of UK prime minister Kier Starmer, to keep up strong support for Ukraine.
Second, posting in support of Sen. Lee was Rep. Thomas Massie, Republican from Kentucky, who wrote, "NATO is a Cold War relic that needs to be relegated to a talking kiosk at the Smithsonian."
All of this appears to also be pushback to a number of political leaders and media pundits lately flooding social media to show support for Zelensky as the new savior of the EU, and many have even suggested that Europe can easily fill the void that the US leaves behind. This is dangerous delusion."

EU has published details of investments on defense. Those includes:
- 150 billion € new funding instruments for loans meant to defense and rearming
- 150 billion € new funding instruments for loans meant to defense and rearming
"The European Union will propose extending €150 billion ($158 billion) in loans to boost defense spending after decades of underinvestment and as US President Donald Trump pulls back American security on the continent.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also said that the EU will propose activating a fiscal escape clause, which could allow countries to use their national budgets to spend an additional €650 billion on defense over four years without triggering budgetary penalties.
Combined with the new defense spending loans, von der Leyen said the package could mobilize nearly €800 billion if governments take full advantage of the new leeway.
“We are in an era of rearmament,” she told reporters in Brussels Tuesday. “Europe is ready to massively boost its defense spending.”

"New plans from the European Union to increase defense spending could potentially mobilize as much as 800 billion euros ($841 billion), European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Tuesday.
"Europe is ready to massively boost its defense spending. Both, to respond to the short-term urgency to act and to support Ukraine but also to address the long-term need to take on much more responsibility for our own European security," she said in a press statement.
Europe is in its "era of rearmament," she noted.
Von der Leyen said she had written to European leaders ahead of the European Council meeting later this week to propose the "ReArm Europe Plan," designed to enable EU member states to increase spending in defense capabilities. She added that this was needed "urgently now but also over a longer time."
"ReArm Europe could mobilise close to EUR 800 billion for a safe and resilient Europe," she said. "This is a moment for Europe. And we are ready to step up."

"Article 5 – the collective defence that sits at the heart of Nato – is dead. The message from the Munich Security Conference last weekend was that European leaders, generals, and senior policy makers no longer trust the Americans to support the European security architecture which has existed since the Second World War."

"BlackRock has agreed to buy two major ports at the Panama Canal from their Hong Kong-based owner, following pressure from Donald Trump over alleged Chinese influence at the vital waterway.
In apparent reference to the ports, the US president has frequently alleged that “China is running the Panama Canal”, adding last month that “we’re going to take it back, or something very powerful is going to happen”.
The ports’ Hong Kong-based owner CK Hutchison will sell the business to a consortium including BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners and Terminal Investment, according to a company statement on Tuesday.
In a large-scale investment in the sector, the consortium will acquire a 90 per cent stake in the CK Hutchison subsidiary that operates the two ports in Panama.
The deal also includes an 80 per cent stake of CK Hutchison’s ports subsidiaries, which run 43 ports in 23 countries, including the UK and in Germany."

Putin Agrees To Mediate Iran Nuke Talks After Trump Request
"Russia agreed to assist President Donald Trump’s administration in communicating with Iran on issues including the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program and its support for regional anti-US proxies, according to people familiar with the situation.
Trump relayed that interest directly to President Vladimir Putin in a phone call in February and top officials from his administration discussed the matter with their Russian counterparts at talks in Saudi Arabia days later, people familiar with the matter in Moscow said, declining to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.
White House officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither Russia nor Iran have publicly confirmed or denied the request.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to questions sent by Bloomberg that “Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations” and that Moscow “is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this.”
A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, when asked if Russia had offered to mediate between Tehran and Washington, said only it was “natural” for countries to offer their assistance."

"Today I have already spoken with the President of Finland, the Prime Minister of Britain, the Prime Minister of Greece, the Prime Minister of Croatia, the Secretary General of NATO, the leader of the German CDU party Friedrich Merz - this is the party that won the recent elections to the Bundestag. Clear support for Ukraine. Thank you.
There is very important news from the European Commission regarding significant funds for the defense of Europe. For us, this is primarily additional air defense: additional systems, additional missiles, additional opportunities to defend our cities and villages, our positions. And all this creates a good additional basis for working to end the war.
Let's continue consultations, there will be new joint steps. Ukraine deserves peace. Ukrainians deserve respect."
