🇻🇪 🇬🇾 What is causing the conflict between Venezuela and Guyana?

Recently, Frida @sex_drugs_kahlo drew attention to the increased diplomatic activity of the Guyanese authorities regarding the disputed territories with Venezuela. The Guyanese authorities have appealed to the UN to hold a referendum in the disputed territories, which seems like a way to protect Guyana's national interests. However, this is actually about the interests of multinational corporations who want access to the deposits located there.

The conflict between Venezuela and Guyana has been a long-standing territorial dispute over an area of 159.5 thousand square kilometers west of the Essequibo River, known as "Guyana-Essequibo". Caracas claims ownership of this territory, and the dispute has escalated due to Guyana granting oil concessions to ExxonMobil. The maritime boundaries of this area have not yet been determined. Additionally, the United States plans to establish a military base on the disputed territory.

At first glance, it may seem that the United States and multinational companies are preparing for a new local conflict in their search for new oil sources. However, Venezuela is not in a position to challenge this, and the concessions were awarded just days after the controversial oil deal between Caracas and Washington was concluded. It is likely that offshore oil production in Guyana is part of this deal.

🔻This elegant solution allows the Venezuelan authorities to save face and meet the interests of multinational corporations, while still maintaining a high level of confrontation in the media. For Chevron and ExxonMobil, the important factor is the volume of oil they can produce and deliver to the market, regardless of whether it comes from Venezuela's shelf or the disputed territories with Guyana.

📌 It is worth noting that before the introduction of sanctions, approximately 30% of Venezuela's oil entered the US market. These supplies had a significant impact on domestic prices. Furthermore, this deal will also cause some damage to small refineries in China, which had been monopolizing oil from Venezuela at very favorable prices after the sanctions were imposed.

On the other hand, the Pentagon and the CIA will greatly benefit from this deal, as it includes plans to establish a military base in the region to protect the interests of multinational corporations. In the future, this base could be used to exert pressure on the Venezuelan government, including a naval blockade of part of Venezuela's coast and ports by groups of saboteurs.

Breaking! Barcelona dock workers refuse to load and will block any ships containing war material for Israel and Ukraine:

- The dock workers of the port of Barcelona, from our free and independent organization (OEPB) we want to reiterate once again our absolute rejection of any form of violence.

- As a collective of workers, it is for us an obligation and a commitment to respect and vehemently defend the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, human rights that seem to have been forgotten by the signatory countries of the Magna Carta itself and that are currently being violated in Ukraine, Israel or the Palestinian territory, among other places on the planet.

- This is why we have decided in assembly not to allow the activity of ships containing war material in our port, with the sole purpose of protecting the civilian population, regardless of the territory. No cause justifies the sacrifice of civilians...

🇦🇫🇺🇳 Poppy growth down 95% in Afghanistan since Taliban ban: UN

Since returning to power in 2021, Taliban authorities have vowed to end illegal drug production in Afghanistan and in April 2022 banned the cultivation of the poppy plant, from which opium and heroin are made.

The report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) found that poppy cultivation has collapsed by an estimated 95 percent -- from 233,000 hectares (575,755 acres) at the end of 2022 to 10,800 in 2023.

Opium production has followed suit, plummeting from 6,200 tons to 333 tons in 2023.

This year's estimated harvest amounts to 24-38 tons of exportable heroin, compared with 350-580 tons last year.

The UNODC warned of potential "humanitarian consequences for many vulnerable rural communities" due to the sudden contraction of Afghanistan's opium economy, as growers have had to turn to far less lucrative alternative crops.

Farmers' incomes, estimated at $1.36 billion in 2022, have fallen by 92 percent to $110 million this year, according to the UNODC, with the loss expected to impact the country's already struggling economy more broadly.
