‘O Sister (Keep Us Steady Through the Storm)’ by Canadian composer #Kathleen_Allan, text by D. Allan, was commissioned by Amanda Weber for Voices of Hope, the women’s prison choir in Shakopee, Minnesota, to perform together with the University of Minnesota Women’s Chorus.

The poem was developed from ideas suggested by the Voices of Hope singers. As Amanda explains, “When other choirs perform this piece, it is as if the voices of incarcerated women are finally able to be heard beyond the fence.”

Born in Vienna in 1744, #Marianna_von_Martines (1744-1812) received a thorough grounding in Baroque compositional techniques, but lived and worked in an era when a newer, more "galant" style had become fashionable.

Her contemporaries often noted and praised the balance of old and new stylistic qualities in her composition." (~Joseph Taff)

Born on August 27, 1965, she graduated from the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in piano, collaborative piano, and composition. Now an Associate Professor at the Conservatory’s Piano Department and a member of the Union of Composers of Armenia, she creates chamber, choral, and sacred music.

Для каждой женщины-композитора из нашего списка мы будем проводить сравнительный анализ: с одной стороны, выявлять прототипы и модели, на которые она опиралась, с другой — сопоставлять её сочинения с музыкой современников. Это позволит нам объективно оценить степень её творческой самостоятельности, эстетическую значимость и новаторство ее творчества, её место в панораме эпохи.

то есть чтобы объективно оценить работу женщины, нужно сравнить её с работой мужчин-современников 🤦🏻‍♀️

очень смешанные чувства, с одной стороны интересно и вроде как надо, с другой - чувствую злость и грусть из-за этого перекоса.

Over two millennia, countless beautiful pieces of sacred music have been written, and today they stand alongside modern arrangements, film scores and concert works. But how much music—sacred and secular—written by women do you know? There’s actually a lot.

Some of these composers were medieval nuns and abbesses, some were conductors and teachers, and some are our contemporaries who write music for the films and series we love. In our winter holiday programme we’ll bring their works together in one concert, from spiritual chants to festive songs.

Join us for our concert-lecture to enjoy wonderful music and learn more about it and the incredible women who created it!
