Watching
Minecraft Movie
semi Review
Spoiler Alert (idgaf if you dont want spoilers)
I went in expecting it to be a very cliché movie. I watched it in 2D, and the theater was almost empty except for about seven annoying kids.
What's the story?
Steve was a regular guy who, as a kid, tried to enter a mine when he wasn’t supposed to. Later, as an adult, he finally did and ended up going through a portal into the Minecraft world.
There’s a lot of filler, but the main plot is that he gets trapped in the Nether, while Minecraft’s dog somehow ends up in the normal world. The dog’s goal is to prevent the villainous Piglins from the Nether from destroying the normal Minecraft world.
What works?
Jack Black did an incredible job, as expected. Yes, the movie has a childish tone, which might feel off-putting for adults, but as long as you're not a grumpy boring ass man, you’ll have fun too.
There’s a bit of a family conflict subplot, but it gets resolved quickly. The film mostly focuses on Steve, Jason Momoa, and the others running from the Piglins and trying to return to the normal world (irl)
There are so many cool ideas that Mojang hasn't added to the game bro
Piglins using Ghasts as transportation
A stronger Piglin that could serve as a mini-boss
Giant villages that appear in the movie
Later on, when the Piglins invade the normal world, there’s a really fun battle. There's also a moment where the protagonist is about to die but is suddenly saved, which could have felt super cliché but thankfully, they didn’t focus on it too much, at least in my opinion.
The ending
It actually surprised me
I expected a huge battle between the normal world’s monsters/animals and the Nether, but they took a different approach, which kept it from feeling predictable.
Steve makes it back to the normal world, and then there’s a Jack Black musical number, which (as always) is amazing. (By the way I love you, Jack Black in your Rock in Rio performance with Júnior Bass Groovador)
Final thoughts
It’s a fun movie—as long as you don’t go in expecting Top Gun: Maverick, but in Minecraft.
If you just want to unwind and brighten up a boring day, I’d recommend watching it
Final rating: 7/10👍
