In 44 BCE, Julius Caesar, the Roman dictator, was assassinated by a group of senators led by Brutus and Cassius. During a meeting in the Theater of Pompey, Caesar was stabbed 23 times by more than 60 conspirators. The attack was motivated by fears that he would become a tyrant, sealing his death with one of the most famous betrayals in history.
