Clannish non-Westerners behave much less honestly toward strangers than universalist Westerners.

17,000 wallets, with or without purchasing power-adjusted amounts of money (US$13.45), were purposefully “lost” at banks, cultural establishments, post offices, hotels, police stations, courts of law, or other public offices in 355 cities across 40 countries.

In each case, a research assistant handed a transparent wallet to an employee at the reception counter, said it had been found nearby, and left. Each wallet contained three identical business cards, allowing researchers to observe whether staff later contacted the owner to return the wallet.

The results show massive differences in rates of civic honesty. In the least honest countries, fewer than 20% of wallets were returned. In the most honest countries, more than 70% of wallets were returned.
