For decades. the actual truth about Watergate was suppressed because the cabal had iron-fisted control of the national narrative about the subject.
But RussiaGate and the exposure of it forced the intelligence agency's bag of tricks out into the open.
Nixon was ending the Vietnam War and his policy of "Vietnamization" was winning. The military-industrial complex could not have that.
Though they shifted their war-propagating activities from Southeast Asia to the Middle East for the rest of the 1970's and into the 2000's, they had to pay Richard Nixon back for moving to successfully end America's involvement in the Vietnam war.

This is the guy who's been such a literal foreign policy disaster his entire wasted political career in Washington DC that Obama's own Secretary of Defense felt safe saying it publicly while Biden was the Vice President that he's "been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades."
Gates said that back in 2011.
So make that 5 decades at this point.
