There was a point when I believed that if the U.S. were attacked, patriotic Americans would flock to D.C. to protect the seat of our nation's laws.
I no longer believe that, which you'd think those residing there would care about as the world's enemies seem to be joining arms against us.
Crazy as it would sound to me 10 or 20 years ago, an invading foreign army could be greeted as liberators by a growing portion of the country if they went to D.C. and nowhere else.
In terms of Statecraft, that's a pretty bad position to put yourself in.

Have the talking heads that were raising the alarm for years about Saudi bombing Yemen realized yet that they were fighting against Iranian power projection in the Saudi's backyard?
Weird that the Houthis overthrowing the Yemeni capital and kicking the President out in 2014 (coup) didn't tip them off that something else was afoot.
Or have they not made that connection yet?

The point of this comment is to show that a lot of intelligent and well-meaning people often have no idea of what they're looking at when it comes to Great Power Competition.
