"What we do (industrial-scale drug trafficking) keeps the global economy afloat."
-line from the miniseries Zero Zero Zero
I think about this often. If you've not seen this miniseries, it's excellent.
It chronicles a shipment of cocaine from its origin point in Columbia to an Old World mafia family in Italy on a circuitous route through terrorist Islamist-controlled North Africa.
These are all parts of the world that I've spent time in, so perhaps my fascination with the show is higher than others.
If you know what's going on in the world, you may also pick up on the fact that the show outlines the rise of the Zetas, former South American Special Forces troops that became the most brutal cartel of them all.
But the initial line is the one that sticks with me the most.
Any time that I see Federal politicians refuse to honor the desires of a plurality of the population regarding closing the border, I wonder why they would really make that gambit and choose to fly in the face of "our democracy" (the will of the people).
Same goes for border states like AZ where pols and judges both flagrantly violate or ignore election laws, subpoenas, and even skip over case law precedent to enact rulings that don't make any sense if things are operating in the way they were intended.
And then I remember the line stated at the outset of this post.
Any financially or economically astute person knows by this point that our economy & banking systems are a ponzi scheme built on a house of cards.
Fractional reserve banking, major banks caught laundering for cartels & human traffickers, or tanking the global economy via ultra-risky bets with ne'er a slap on the wrist for the decision makers.
What if that line from the movie was not just a snarky writer, but an observation that is incredibly on-point?

I'm awaiting all of the MSNBC/NYT/CNN/DNC journos who talked about "kompromat" for years to explain why U.S. adversaries knowing we have mentally weak & feeble POTUS is our strength, akshually.
