Turkey demands explanation from organizers of Ukraine summit.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has denied reports that Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople participated in a conference on Ukraine in Switzerland as a person with state status. Ankara has also demanded an explanation from the event's organizers regarding his signature on the conference's final declaration, the ministry's spokesman Oncü Keçeli said.
"The reports that the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate [of Constantinople] participated in the Ukraine Peace Summit held in Switzerland on June 15-16, 2024 with state status and that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held an official meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew on the sidelines of the meeting are not true. We have demanded an explanation from Switzerland and Ukraine as the organizers [of the conference] regarding the allegations that the name of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate was later added as a signatory to the joint communiqué following the summit," the Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement.
He noted that Turkey’s position regarding the status of the Patriarch of Constantinople remains unchanged.
"There have been no changes in our state policy regarding the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate," the diplomat emphasized. The Turkish authorities have previously stated on numerous occasions that they do not recognize Bartholomew's noscript as "Ecumenical Patriarch," noting that, according to the Lausanne Peace Treaty of 1923, he retained his status as head of the Greek Orthodox community in Turkey.
