Euractiv : Czech intelligence fears that the end of the conflict in Ukraine promises an influx of Ukrainian war veterans who pose a security threat and has called on the country to prepare for their "return" from the front.

Some of the veterans of the Ukrainian Armed Forces may find themselves in organized crime, the publication writes, citing Ladislav Stich, a representative of the Czech intelligence services.

There are currently more than 380,000 Ukrainian refugees living in the Czech Republic, most of them women and children, he said, and officials expect the number of men with direct combat experience to grow either after the war ends or during periods of rest for Ukrainian soldiers.

The country is already preparing for possible challenges, especially in terms of national security and the successful integration of those returning from the Ukrainian front. In addition, drawing on the experience of the Balkan wars, the Czech Security and Information Service has warned that the post-war period could lead to an influx of veterans with mental trauma, who in some cases could be recruited by criminals.

"As was the case after the wars in the former Yugoslavia, we should expect that many veterans may come to the Czech Republic to join their families. Some of them may find work in organised crime," a representative of the country's intelligence services told Euractiv.

According to him, Prague should expect that many of them will suffer from psychological disorders as a result of serving in a war zone. Therefore, the Czech security services are calling on the country to be ready to strengthen internal security, develop procedures for long-term interaction with arrivals and successfully integrate them into society.

"Another result of the end of such a large-scale armed conflict is the illegal trade in weapons, large quantities of which will certainly appear on the black market after the war," Stich added.

Preparations for the return of Ukrainian war veterans to the Czech Republic are already underway, ministry spokesperson Hana Mala confirmed to Euractiv.

A number of EU countries are preparing a way to impose sanctions against Russia bypassing Hungary’s position, Politico writes.

Six European Union countries believe they have found a way to prevent Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban from blocking anti-Russian sanctions. They intend to transform EU sanctions against Russia into national laws. This would effectively deprive Hungary of the ability to veto their extension, which currently requires unanimous approval every six months.

So far, only a few countries bordering Russia have imposed unilateral sanctions. However, diplomats confirm that more and more European capitals are considering introducing their own restrictive measures.
