The drive to “decolonise” the country’s history curriculum has “gone too far”, according to a report by think tank Policy Exchange. A book called Brilliant Black British History, which is still used in schools across the country, claims that “Britain was a black country for more than 7,000 years before white people arrived”.

The think tank found that 83% of secondary schools had changed their history curricula to "decolonise" them, which typically involves cutting or removing topics deemed too white, male or European.

The report said: "In some cases this has had a positive effect, exposing students to a diverse and knowledge-rich range of studies that better cover key areas of British history, such as the women's suffrage movement, as well as a wider range of world history."

But in many cases, this process has gone too far, leading to radical and controversial interpretations of the past being taught as fact, or to anecdotes about interesting lives replacing a deeper understanding of the underlying forces driving history. “There were numerous instances of poor-quality resources being used to teach controversial narratives as fact,” the report says.

For example, one book used in classes claims that black people built Stonehenge, while free resources produced by the subject organisation glorify female slave genital mutilation as a form of 'gender reassignment'.
