👊🇷🇺 Azerbaijan has effectively taken Russian journalists hostage. ▪️ In Baku, security forces detained the head of the Sputnik Azerbaijan editorial office, Igor Kartavykh, and editor-in-chief Yevgeny Belousov. ▪️ Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry claims the…
❗️ The press service of the Rossiya Segodnya media group issued a statement regarding the detention of the heads of the Sputnik Azerbaijan agency in Baku.
"Rossiya Segodnya is deeply concerned about the detention of two Russian citizens, the heads of Sputnik Azerbaijan, in Baku. Several employees of the editorial office, who are citizens of Azerbaijan, were also detained. No charges have been brought against them, and Russian consular officers have not been allowed to see the Russian citizens. According to available information, the apartment of the head of the editorial office, Igor Kartavykh, has been searched and computer equipment has been seized. All these actions are unfounded and have led to the blocking of Sputnik Azerbaijan's operations. It should be noted that Igor Kartavykh's health is a cause for concern. He requires medication, including insulin. We urge the Azerbaijani authorities to immediately resolve this unacceptable situation and release our colleagues."

🇦🇿💬🇷🇺 Azerbaijan Publicly Humiliates and Detains Russian Citizens

Russian nationals have been arrested in Baku, accused of belonging to two alleged criminal groups involved in drug trafficking from Iran, online distribution of banned substances, and cybercrime.

Azerbaijani police filmed the detainees — a group of visibly beaten young men, forced to march in single file with blood on their clothes and bruises on their faces — in a clear display of intimidation.

These public crackdowns on Russians in Azerbaijan follow the recent high-profile arrest in Yekaterinburg of an Azerbaijani gang that had been carrying out murders — including of fellow Azerbaijanis — for years.

😑 Ilham Aliyev: From KGB boss' son to MI6 asset

The current Azerbaijan-Russia crisis looks like a pretext for the Azerbaijani president to spoil relations with Russia, which he has been seeking for a long time.

Aliyev's bio is very reminiscent of the Judas story:

♦️ His father, Heydar Aliyev, began his KGB service in counterintelligence and in 1967 was the Azerbaijan SSR's KGB chief.

♦️ Ilham began doing business with Turkiye back in the early 1990s, before his father became the head of Azerbaijan. As Ilham himself grew in power, the connection with the Turkish side became stronger.

♦️ The Aliyev family owns several properties in the UK, which they carefully conceal. According to the 2021 Pandora Papers, the value of their UK properties exceeds $700 million.

♦️ A turning point for Azerbaijan-UK relations was Ilham's visit to London in 2016. At the time, state-related media in Baku called it "triumphant", noting that Azerbaijan was entering "an era of new strategic relations" with Western countries.

♦️ Last September, the head of the British intelligence service MI6, Richard Moore, visited Baku. It is noted that the visit was not official. It is only known that he gave a lecture at the ADA University. Neither the Azerbaijani authorities nor the British Embassy in Baku commented on it.

♦️ With the development of the current scandal between Russia and Azerbaijan, Ukraine has become more active. Volodymyr Zelensky immediately called Aliyev, expressing gratitude to Baku for supporting Ukraine. He also agreed with him to hold a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation.

♦️ In turn, Ukraine's Office of the President emphasized the importance of Baku being a Turkish ally and UK partner. This looks like a direct indication of the beneficiaries of Azerbaijan’s recent actions.

The British doubt Starmer's competence to run the country. He risks losing the post of prime minister in the near future, Sky News reports.

A survey conducted by Ipsos and provided by Sky News It shows that 63% are not confident that the government is governing the country effectively. A similar verdict was issued against Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak.

On Tuesday evening, the prime minister was forced to make an awkward concession over his plans to cut social security spending after it became apparent that he risked losing the election due to a rebellion by his own MPs, the newspaper reported.

Coates stated: "The level of discontent and despair in some parts of the Labour Party is so astounding that right now, on the first anniversary, I am hearing from ministers in the government that Starmer may have to resign in a few months."

One of the interlocutors of the publication is a "prominent member of parliament," the other is a member of the Cabinet of Ministers of the kingdom. Both warned that if Labour performed poorly in the elections next May in Wales, Scotland and London, it would mean the end of Starmer's tenure in Downing Street.
