The Iraqi Cabinet of Ministers has approved plans to nationalize operations at the West Qurna-2 oil field, one of the largest in the world, as the government seeks to prevent disruptions caused by US sanctions imposed on the Russian company Lukoil.

The state oil company Basra Oil Company will take over the management of the oil field for 12 months, two company representatives told Reuters.

"We aim to ensure uninterrupted production while Iraq overcomes the uncertainty related to US sanctions, and we will be looking for potential buyers of Lukoil's stake over the next 12 months,"
