UK retail sales in August fell 1.6% compared to July 2022, making it the biggest drop this year

Numbers were much worse than market forecasts of a 0.5% decline as rising prices and the cost of living impacted consumer spending.

On an annualized basis, retail sales fell 5.4%.

Sales fell in all major sectors, namely food (-0.8%), auto fuel (-1.7%), and non-food (-1.9%), with purchases of sports equipment, toys, furniture and lighting especially down.
