Amarok 3.1 Released with Updated Last.fm Plugin, Last.fm Similar Artists Applet
Coming a little over three months after Amarok 3.0, the Amarok 3.1 release introduces a new version of the Last.fm Similar Artists context applet that works with the Amarok 3.x series and an updated Last.fm plugin that now uses a token-based authentication method and notifies users of session key errors.
On top of that, this release disables gapless playback when ReplayGain is active and the following track is not from the same album to avoid volume spikes due to a delay in applying ReplayGain and shows podcast provider actions for non-empty podcast categories.
There are also various fixes to improve the saving and restoring of the playlist queue on quit or restart, the system tray icon menu reordering, erroneous apparent zero track progresses on track changes, the ‘save playlist’ button in playlist controls, and threading-related crashes in the Cover Manager.

New SLUBStick Attack Makes Linux Kernel Vulnerabilities More Dangerous
A team of researchers from the Graz University of Technology in Austria has published a paper on SLUBStick, a new Linux kernel exploitation technique that can make heap vulnerabilities more dangerous.
Software cross-cache attacks, which exploit the memory reuse of the kernel allocator, can increase the impact of a vulnerability, but the TU Graz researchers noted that such attacks are still impractical as they only have a success rate of 40% and they often result in a crash of the system.
The new SLUBStick technique can allow an attacker to elevate a limited heap vulnerability to an arbitrary memory read/write primitive, which, as the researchers demonstrated, can be leveraged for privilege escalation and container escapes, even with modern defenses enabled.

KDE Plasma 6.1.4 Desktop Released with Various Improvements and Bug Fixes
KDE Plasma 6.1.4 is here three weeks after KDE Plasma 6.1.3 and improves the smoothness of resizing Plasma widgets, updates textual-list-style group pop-up of Plasma’s Task Manager to scale properly, and refines how KRunner matches text to System Settings pages to be less aggressive about showing them to users for searches with a very weak match.
This release also improves the KWin window and composite manager to no longer place windows with the noscriptbar cut off on top when opening windows whose minimum height is still taller than the screen. KWin will now ensure the window’s noscriptbar is visible to allow users to move it around.
